Job Details

The Bilingual Student Development Advisor is responsible for assisting the Project Director of HSI-STEM in executing and facilitating program goals by advising and coaching a full caseload of STEM students and providing required and optional services for which are designed to increase student success, graduation and transfer rates. Special emphasis will be directed toward "at risk" students with limited English proficiency.

This is a full-time, grant-funded position.

Examples of Duties:

  1. Develops initial cohorts of STEM students.
  2. Provides career, financial aid, personal, advisement, registration assistance, and case-management style student services. Emphasis is placed on facilitating the success of Hispanic and low-income students pursuing degrees in STEM fields.
  3. Utilizes Starfish and other required technology to maintain an intake-to-graduation tracking system.
  4. Represents the College and HSI-STEM program within the community.
  5. Ensures student participation in HSI-STEM workshops and other activities.
  6. Assists Project Director to develop, measure effectiveness of, and modify intervention strategies.
  7. Makes appropriate student referrals throughout the College community and to community-based organizations and government agencies.
  8. Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of summer college-level prep programs.
  9. Organizes initial group career development sessions for first-time STEM students.
  10. Introduces students to the Career Success Plan process, the college's career planning software, and assists them in developing career plans.
  11. Follows up with cohort students individually to review career steps, complete plans, and ensure they remain a part of each student's electronic student record.
  12. Implements career and aptitude assessments for students who have not identified a definite career pathway.
  13. Endeavors to meet with each HSI-STEM cohort student individually up to seven times each Fall and Spring semester to review progress toward goals and adjust career plans, as needed.
  14. Recruits for the STEM program by assisting with walk in registration in the Advisement office.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish language required.
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, student personnel services, student development, or a related area required. Master's degree preferred.
  • National or Licensed Counseling Certificate such as LPC, NBCC, LCSW, Career Endorsement Credential or similar credentials preferred.
  • Documented proficiency in oral and written communications and interpersonal relations.
  • Minimum two to four years of community college academic and career counseling/advisement experience. Experience with STEM cohorts preferred.
  • Previous experience and knowledge working with diverse student populations, especially academically at-risk, low-income, first generation, high-need students.
  • Previous experience with the use of student data systems, cohort tracking, student case management, and coaching.
  • Commitment to the community college mission including addressing the needs of a diverse student population
