Overview

Under the general supervision of the Director of Environmental Health & Safety and Risk Management, the EHS Specialist will support the development, implementation, training and maintenance of the various programs necessary to ensure a safety and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students, and the general public. The EHS Specialist will also assist with protecting the University against losses, ensuring that operations are in compliance with University policies and standards, and applicable local, nationally recognized standards of best practices, and state and federal occupational safety and environmental quality and health requirements. This position is also responsible for providing guidance, support and implementing the campus’ comprehensive environmental, health and safety program. The programs support the teaching, service and research mission of the campus community, and its facilities.

Position Summary
  • Recognize and evaluate occupational and environmental hazards in current and proposed University operations, utilizing specialized processes, testing and instrumentation as necessary
  • Develop and implement controls in a manner that effectively eliminates and/or minimizes risk of harm and liability, complies with regulatory requirements and/or industry standards of care, and minimizes disruption to the University mission
  • Research, analyze and interpret data utilizing the application of theories and principals in accordance with professional environmental and occupational standards, develop associated reports and effectively present findings
  • Maintain and/or develop policies and procedures that comply with current and emerging local, state and federal environmental and safety requirements, and effectively reflect industry injury reduction and control trends
  • Investigate employee, student or visitor complaints in association with a suspected biological, chemical, or hazardous energy over exposure; determine severity of exposure, if any, and develop effective mitigation steps; assist with implementation; and ensure that regulatory and University documentation requirements are met
  • Work independently and act as a project coordinator for special assignments, performing detailed research and analysis, developing reports and presenting findings
  • Provide technical reference support to emergency response systems in the event of a hazardous material release on campus grounds
  • Coordinate the work of specialized service contractors as needed
  • Ensure that Department goals and objectives are met
  • Maintain a professional-like attitude at all times while on duty
  • Perform job duties in a safe manner and follow Department, Campus and University policies and procedures
  • Attend trainings and maintain skill currency as appropriate to safely and effectively complete assignments
  • May provide lead direction to other staff members and student assistants

Education and Experience
