Job description

Illinois State University invites applications for the position of Department of Agriculture Chairperson. The Department seeks a dynamic, collaborative chairperson to lead undergraduate and graduate programs. The Chairperson is primarily responsible for long-range planning, fiscal management, personnel, faculty and staff advancement, program assessment, curriculum review and development, and oversight of teaching and research laboratories. The Chairperson shall encourage high-quality teaching, research, and service and advocate for resources needed to further advance the Department's mission, with emphasis on student recruitment and retention. The Chairperson shall develop and maintain partnerships within and outside the university, as well as promote departmental programs to campus, alumni, business, governmental, and other educational stakeholders, provide oversight for a teaching and research farm and a horticulture center, advocate for the department to be at the forefront of discussions in Illinois related to agriculture, and provide active leadership for faculty and staff within a university culture of shared governance. Preferred start date is July 1, 2020.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in an area appropriate to the Department of Agriculture with academic achievement that merits appointment, with tenure, at the rank of associate or full professor. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrative colleagues, alumni, and professional communities served by the department. For full consideration, applicants will have a successful record in teaching, administrative experience, graduate education, and scholarship, including funded research, grant, contract, or project activities. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

Salary, Rank, and Tenure: The position is a twelve-month tenured appointment. The salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.

The Department of Agriculture:
The Department of Agriculture at Illinois State University has 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty, approximately 500 undergraduate students, and 15 graduate students. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Agriculture with sequences in Agribusiness, Agriculture Communication and Leadership, Agriculture Education, Agronomy Management, Animal Industry Management, Animal Science, Crop and Soil Science, Food Industry Management, Horticulture and Landscape Management, and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. The Department offers a Master of Science in Agriculture with sequences in Agribusiness, Agriculture Education and Leadership, and Agriscience. The Department boasts unique resources to facilitate teaching and research, including a meats laboratory, an agriculture mechanics and technology laboratory, a 25-acre horticulture center, and a 600-acre teaching and research farm with grain and livestock production.
