Core Job Summary

The Health Systems Director of TeleHealth is a visible leader of the Tele-Health program with direct oversight over the execution of virtual care programs/projects, related facilities, information technology, equipment management, business development, marketing, physician relations, operations, contracting, billing, reimbursement, legal, compliance and care delivery process innovation.

The Director will develop a department and roadmap for delivering local, regional, statewide and national telehealth services that are user-friendly and market competitive. The Director will be responsible for working closely with health system and academic leadership, physicians, and operational and technical teams to direct state-of-the-art telehealth solutions and programs for patients in all stages of care. Understands clinical workflows in inpatient, outpatient, post-acute, and home-based environments, as well as technology trends and digital / telehealth needs of patients, families, clinicians, healthcare organizations, and employers. Identifies, develops, accelerates and continually improves telehealth services across the continuum of care. Builds buy-in and support from executive stakeholders and leads change management efforts to transform digital healthcare for patients and families. Represents digital and telehealth strategy to internal and external stakeholders, translating how telehealth can improve clinical and cost outcomes and patient and clinician experience. Ensures client satisfaction and builds mutually positive relationships with UHealth administrators, key physicians, payers, and community and state leaders to influence telehealth legislation, reimbursement, and service expansion in the greater Southeast, nationally and internationally.

Core Job Functions

  • Has primary responsibility for the maintenance and expansion of all business aspects of the TeleHealth Department and UHealth telehealth services.
  • Reviews and establishes departmental policies, procedures, advisory services and plans in conjunction with the Medical Director of TeleHealth.
  • Designs methods and procedures for efficiency, productivity, and control of operations and coordinates day-to-day operations.
  • Works closely with the Medical Director of TeleHealth to analyze and present operational and financial outcomes of TeleHealth programs to ensure the success of the program.
  • Supports the expansion of TeleHealth at UHealth by creating/modifying business processes as needed to meet the changing needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participates in developing long-term and short-term strategies for implementation of TeleHealth activities.
  • Reviews and establishes job responsibilities and authority, objectives, and standards of performance for subordinates; coordinates on-the-job training and orientation; responsible for morale, attitude and retention of employees.
  • Develops and directs the collection, analysis, maintenance of statistical data to identify, diagnose, and correct problems/factors affecting performance, to track utilization, and other needs.
  • Excellent communicator, able to work in a complex matrix environment communicating with senior leaders, physicians, department directors, and front-line staff from the UHealth, operations, finance, IT, HR, and other key stakeholder groups.
  • Maintain program-specific content for TeleHealth Department.
  • Participate in recruitment of TeleHealth Department visits.
  • Works closely with Regional Development and Marketing representatives to market and successfully sell program and services to partners and affiliates
  • Working closely Ambulatory Access and clinical experts, fosters and supports the creation of new Telehealth programs and products in conjunction with the Medical Director of TeleHealth.
  • Participates in discussions with established and potential clients to determine and assess their clinical needs and requirements, establishing and documenting proper procedures and policies regarding TeleHealth services.
  • Promotes awareness of TeleHealth usage/applications within the organization and the region, state, nationally, internationally in conjunction with the Medical Director.
  • Participates in the planning, development and administration of activities that build positive community, state‑wide, national and international relations for the program.
  • Manages telehealth coordinators and matrixed team members to keep pace with a rapidly expanding program, anticipating additional workforce needs to support planned work.
  • Conducts site visits as part of needs assessments of potential and active TeleHealth clients: review objectives, issues and priorities and recommend timelines for implementation of TeleHealth services.
  • Prepares for Telehealth Steering Committees, and effectively engages that group to develop and update a program roadmap aligned with organizational strategy, taking into account available resources, in conjunction with the Medical Director who will chair this Committee.
  • Represents TeleHealth Department at meetings with various community, state, and national groups, and the press and other news agencies.
  • Stays current on regional, state, national and international TeleHealth-related topics, including regulatory, legal, reimbursement, and public policy, and the possible impact to TeleHealth services and actively advocate and build the awareness for UHealth TeleHealth at local, state, and federal governmental levels, keeping the Medical Director of TeleHealth apprised of activities, progress and future plans.
  • Serves as representative and advocate for issues and needs for UM TeleHealth with state and federal governmental agencies.
  • Maintains professional affiliations and is expected to pursue independent study as well as formalized training to enhance professional growth and development to keep current on telehealth industry trends and legislation.
  • Facilitates the contracting process with outside healthcare facilities and vendors in coordination with the Contracts, Legal, HIPAA Privacy and Revenue Cycle Departments.
  • Participates in discussion of the purchase, license, or other acquisition of telehealth-related systems for the organization in order to encourage uniformity, cohesion and compatibility, working with the Medical Director and IT Governance Committee.
  • Interacts with Medical Staff Office to maintain an updated database of TeleHealth credentialing and state licenses for UHealth providers.
  • Coordinates/participates in visits to external healthcare facilities, as necessary.
  • Prepares departmental annual budget and business plans with on-going review and action to assure that budgeted objectives are achieved, and that cost and expense objectives are met.

Core Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Information Technology or related field. Master’s degree, or equivalent work experience preferred. 4 or more years’ experience in TeleHealth operations or administration and / or as a healthcare analyst.

  • Understanding of financial management and experience in budgeting.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Solid time management/problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting and appropriately maintaining large amounts of data for efficient re-use.
  • Experience working effectively with a wide range of colleagues, from entry level to senior executives, physicians, nurses, administrative and information technology staff.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, customer-focused, “can-do” attitude at all times, both within UM and at external institutions.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work beyond normal 8am-5pm schedule when necessary.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational and human relations skills, self-motivated, professional.
