Roles/Responsibilities:
This is a part-time (17.5 hours per week) position reporting to the Legal Director of the MLP. The Housing Attorney will join a growing, innovative medical clinic-based practice serving low-income patients-clients (and their families) throughout Eastern Queens and Nassau County. The Housing Attorney will teach a housing practicum course for Hofstra Law School students in the fall and spring semesters and handle casework throughout the year. The Housing Attorney is expected to be on-site at three of Northwell Health’s medical clinics in Nassau County for approximately 9 hours per week The Housing Attorney’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
•Maintain a full caseload of medical-legal partnership client representation in landlord/tenant actions that flow from the MLP's work in the clinics; this will include eviction defense and affirmative litigation;
•Work collaboratively with other medical-legal partnership attorneys as well as Northwell Health physicians, residents, patient navigators and social workers to assure client health, social and legal needs are met;
•Support design and development of training, community outreach, and education materials to clients, medical and legal students, and Northwell Health physicians, residents, faculty and staff;
•Work with Hofstra Law School faculty to conduct policy advocacy, including advocacy before legislative, administrative, and judicial bodies to advance the interests of clients;
•Supervise law students who will practice under the supervision of the Housing Attorney in the MLP clinic practices.
Qualifications:Juris Doctor degree required. Attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar (required); minimum of 2 years of experience handling NYC and Nassau County-based Landlord/Tenant cases. Landlord/Tenant trial experience is a plus. A demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with under-served clients (and their families) who have complex medical, social and legal needs; enthusiasm for and experience in working across professions to support client needs; excellent analytical, research and writing skills; strong interpersonal, communication, time management and organizational skills; experience with Themis-CLIO or other practice management systems (preferred); fluency or strong proficiency in Spanish (preferred).
