Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a research discipline taught at Sul Ross State University or in a related field. Established record of research program oversight with supervision and mentoring, record of effective leadership, grantsmanship, management, and organizational skills, established record of peer-reviewed scholarship. University experience in teaching and research and proven capability in organizational administration. Excellent administrative skills including: experience with budgeting, supervision, university teaching and research, grantsmanship, strong communication skills, computer literacy, and humanistic skills – ability to work with individuals in diverse academic areas, and a record of academic accomplishment and established reputation as an academic leader that warrants a tenured faculty appointment.

Preferred

Experience in higher education administration, preferably as a department chair, division director or dean.

Primary Responsibilities

Essential: General oversight of the university’s chairs of the departments in Graduate Studies for the Alpine campus, and the academic research mission and priorities at the Alpine and Middle Rio Grande campuses for faculty conducting research, research scientists and research technicians.

The Assistant Provost works to assure the high quality of the graduate programs. Accordingly, the Assistant Provost receives graduate theses from each academic college, reviews the theses for conformity to university-established standards for theses, and submits the theses for publication. The Assistant Provost works with the Graduate Council to verify the credentials of the Graduate and Assistant Graduate faculty and to assure that faculty members meet the standards required of Graduate and Associate Graduate Faculty. The Assistant Provost is responsible for facilitating the assessment of each graduate program according to the mandates of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the accrediting agency. The Assistant Provost administers the Master of Arts in Liberal Arts degree, overseeing the completion of degree plans, the formation of graduate committees, and the submission of prospecti and projects required to complete the liberal arts degree.

The Assistant Provost promotes, facilitates and supports research, education, scholarly, creative, service and outreach activities, including external funding of such activities. The Assistant Provost leads the establishment and implementation of research strategic goals, policies and practices in collaboration with deans, directors, department chairs, faculty and research personnel. Commitment to diversity in graduate students, research, leadership, and recruitment and retention from diverse and multicultural backgrounds. Promotes research excellence and integrity, and assesses research program effectiveness. The Assistant Provost conducts other duties as assigned by the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Non-Essential: Attend various meetings as a representative of Sul Ross State University as they pertain to graduate studies, research and extramural funding, such as, but not limited to the Texas State University System Chief Research Officer meeting, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and governmental and non-governmental research and funding organizations.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Supervision Given: Oversees the chairs of the departments in Graduate Studies, McNair, PPOHA and TRIO grant directors, and Administrative Associate for Sponsored Programs.

Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times.
Position is Security Sensitive.

Other Information

Texas Law requires a 60 day waiting period before new state employees are eligible to enroll in health insurance.

    Called "Possibly the most underrated little university west of the Mississippi" by CBS's Dan Rather, Sul Ross State University in West Texas boasts a combination of small class sizes, an appreciation of both fine arts and the sciences and popular professional programs in a relaxed, friendly environment.

    Who Is Sul Ross? Where is Sul Ross?
    The university's name honors Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross, the son of a pioneer Waco, Texas, family and a popular soldier, governor, educator and humanitarian. Founded in 1917 as a teacher college, Sul Ross continues to offer teacher education as one of its most popular programs. Others in high demand are business, criminal justice and agricultural and natural resource sciences. Sul Ross achieved university status in 1969.

    The university, comprising 647 acres in Alpine, Texas, boasts a beautiful 93-acre main campus of exquisitely-detailed buildings and enjoys perhaps the most temperate climate in the state. Its situation in the Davis Mountains overlooks the center of the city below, yet it remains within easy reach of many local stores and restaurants. The university also has a 468-acre working ranch that serves its animal science programs.

    A Small Size, But Plenty to Do
    With an enrollment of about 2,000 students on the main campus in Alpine, class sizes are small, guaranteeing a much higher level of personal attention from instructors and the university's support staff. But there's plenty for students to do in their free time: lots of student clubs and organizations, a thriving arts community and a strong athletic tradition.

    The SRSU men's basketball team won the conference championship five times in the past 20 years, including the 1999 American Southwest Conference championship. The women's basketball team has also won five conference championships and played in eight national playoffs, even making it to the Final Four.

    Similarly, the Lobos football and baseball teams have won five conference titles each in the past 20 years, including American Southwest Conference championships in the late 1990s. The Lady Lobos volleyball team has won nine conference championships in all.

    Rodeo is significant part of the Sul Ross program, and the university is the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Many team members have gone on to become world champions, and 1951 graduate Harley May is a charter member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Hall of Fame.
