DescriptionJob Purpose: Develop and implement media relations, issues management andcrisis communication strategies to advance Georgia Tech and support theinstitute's strategic initiatives. Responsible for advancing the institute'slocal, regional, national and global visibility; serving as the Institutesofficial primary spokesperson and as the public information officer for theGeorgia Tech Police Department; and overseeing the institute social mediainitiatives. In addition, manages the open records staff, media relationsstaff, and social media staff setting employee and/or group goals, decidingorganizational structure to meet the goals, assessing and providing feedbackfor employee and/or group performance and making pay recommendations.

 Major Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute communications strategies to promote the Institutes brand and enhance its reputation.
  • Serve as the official primary spokesperson for the Institute.
  • Oversee services/vendors that support media relations such as media monitoring services, media database, public relations firms, etc.
  • Maintain relationships with key news media representatives and coordinate media responses.
  • Formulate and direct release of public information to the news media. Oversee production of the Institutes news summary.
  • Manage the news section of the Institutes website. Monitor and assess news coverage and trends.
  • Lead Institute level crisis communications and issues management responses, including media relations for Georgia Tech Police Department.
  • Organize and supervise activities of media relations, open records staff, licensing staff, and social media staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Work Experience: Six or more years of related job experience
  • Certifications: N/A
  • Skills: This job requires excellent media/public relations and writing/oral communication skills and the ability to: critically evaluate information and assess news value, work independently or part of a team, think creatively, prioritize activities, work collaboratively across departments and with a variety of projects and constituencies and make sound decisions under tight deadline pressure.

     Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: mediarepresentatives and other external audiences, Institute leadership andstudents, faculty and staff. This position typically will advise and counsel:leadership, campus communicators and other Institute constituents includingfaculty, staff and students. This position will supervise: media relationsstaff, social media staff, open records staff, and licensing staff.
