Job description

Reporting to the Dean of the Law School, the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration is responsible for the creation and management of the operating budget of the Law School; oversight of capital and restricted accounts; preparation of financial and related reports (both for internal use and for external audiences); management of reporting obligations to accrediting agencies and consumer rankings groups; and oversight of the Law School faculty services department. Additionally, the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration provides quantitative analytical expertise and guidance to other aspects of Law School operations, including admissions operations in particular. More broadly, the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration advises on strategic planning initiatives for the Law School.

STATUS:   Full-time, 12 Month, With Benefits
WORK HOURS:   8:30-4:30 Monday-Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours
FLSA:  Exempt
MINIMUM PAY: $130,460 / year

Essential and Related Functions:

  • Assists the Dean of the Law School in the drafting of Law School budgets and monitors compliance with those budgets over the course of the fiscal year. Advises the Dean on effective use of operating, restricted and capital funds.
  • Tracks financial performance of the Law School, preparing regular reports for internal use and, as appropriate, for external audiences.
  • Coordinates the submission of the Law School’s responses to annual data requests to accrediting agencies, including the American Bar Association and Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Assists the Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in ensuring compliance with relevant accreditation standards.
  • Oversees the submission of responses to annual consumer ranking surveys, including but not limited to the U.S. News and World Report law school rankings. As part of this process, the Assistant Dean analyzes rankings metrics and suggests ways in which the Law School can enhance its relative performance.
  • Provides quantitative analytical support to other areas of Law School operations, including but not limited to employing models to effectively use scholarship resources to achieve admissions targets (including academic credentials of class, diversity, and net tuition revenue).
  • Manages the Faculty Services department, which currently includes four individuals providing administrative assistance to members of the Law School Faculty.
  • As a member of the Law School administrative cabinet, participates in creating and implementing strategic planning initiatives for the Law School. Is actively engaged in legal education trends, providing expert guidance on the legal education marketplace.
  • Coordinates with University Facilities on all outstanding capital requests and projects. Develops annual capital request budget in coordination with the Dean. Acts as primary point of contact for Law School building and infrastructure needs and requests.
  • Additional related duties as assigned.

Takes full responsibility for unforeseen delays/issues, openly communicates situation and quickly adjusts plans, resources for the best possible outcomes. Proactively looks for areas to improve quality of services to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Talent Development - Demonstrates understanding of career aspirations of individual work group members and provides structured feedback to them. Encourages greater involvement and provides timely rewards and recognition for efforts. Builds informal relationships with work group. Encourages others to share issues that could hinder achievement of work goals.

Qualifications

Relevant graduate degree is preferred with 5-7 years of management experience in higher education or a similar field, or a combination of experience and education from which a similar background could be attained. Strong analytical skills and ability to manage large-scale projects. Thorough understanding of higher education policy and procedures. Ability to work productively with fellow administrators and faculty.

Physical Requirements:

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Working Conditions:

  • As the position involves typical office or administrative work, the worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Types of Work:

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
