Under general supervision of the Dean of Corrections Education, this position is responsible for creating pathways for incarcerated students in vocational programs, GED and college degree programming (AA/Second Chance Pell), as well as supporting individuals to locate employment/education services upon release to the community.

The work station for Corrections Navigators is on-site at the correctional facility to which the navigator is assigned, either the Cedar Creek Correctional Center in Littlerock, Washington or the Garrett Heyns Education Center at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, Washington.

Essential Duties Summary

Support may include assisting students to further their education beyond a high school credential through higher education and/or vocational programming, assisting education program completers in job search and job referral to employment opportunities related to the student’s training and qualifications, and cultivating post-release opportunities for students with organizations and employers in the community. Examples include, but are not limited to,
•Promote student success, quality education and services, equity and inclusion, and stewardship and sustainability in support of the mission and values of the College.
•Support for educational assessment and placement, including maintenance of necessary training/certifications from appropriate state agencies and vendors.
•Assist students to become eligible for Pell Grant, Washington State grant, and scholarships.
•Guide students in clarifying educational, career, and life goals.
•Support student’s goals through assistance with next steps.
•Data collection.
•Network with other community college navigators to expand and coordinate services.
•Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with major study in a related field (i.e., justice studies, human services, counseling, social work, education, etc.).

OR

•Equivalent education/experience.

AND

•Ability to pass the DOC security clearance

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The Corrections Education Navigator is a full-time position.

The successful candidate must be cleared by an FBI background check and successfully complete a six-week Department of Corrections CORE training program (or provide evidence of previous completion) prior to assignment in a prison setting and will be expected to participate in additional professional development and DOC training as appropriate.

This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range is $42,000 – $44,500 depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The state of Washington provides a comprehensive benefits package for state employees. The position may participate in the TIAA/CREF retirement system.

BACKGROUND CHECK:
Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.

The Region

The college is located in southwest Washington on the 1-5 corridor midway between Seattle and Portland, in a beautifully green area of forests and farmland. Wide fertile valleys are bordered by picturesque Mt. Rainier and the Cascade Range on the east, and the Willapa Hills on the west. Puget Sound and Hood Canal to the north and the Columbia River and famous Columbia River Gorge and Mount St. Helens to the south are within a short commute from the college. The populace enjoys the mild climate of the Pacific Northwest with low mean temperatures of 38 in January and a high mean of 78 in July.

Centralia College East

Centralia College East (CCEast), located in Morton, represents Centralia College's dedication to meeting educational needs of the residents of central and eastern Lewis County. CCEast provides registration services, educational advising and tutoring, Running Start, career counseling, assistance with financial aid, adult literacy tutoring, GED, T.E.E.N. program for pregnant and parenting teens, placement testing (COMPASS), and online access to Centralia College's library resources. Some classes connect CCEast students to the main campus via interactive television. The CCEast Organization of Students offers additional activities for students.

Garrett Heyns Education Center

The Garrett Heyns Education Center (GHEC) is located within the Washington Corrections Center, a medium security correctional facility situated on a 455-acre site three miles north of the city of Shelton. The Corrections Center is located 50 miles north of Centralia College's main campus and houses approximately 1,600 inmates. Centralia College has participated in an interagency agreement with the Department of Corrections to provide educational services for offenders since 1975. GHEC is a branch campus of Centralia College.
