The physics division is currently covering five radiation therapy venues: Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) Main, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) West, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) at Deerfield Beach, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) at Coral Gables and Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH). The division currently consists of fourteen medical physicists and nine dosimetrists who carry out clinical, research and resident teaching duties.


The senior physicist for the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Proton Therapy system shall be full-time faculty member in the Radiation Oncology Department at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level will be available based on the experience. Under the guidance of the Chief of Medical Physics, the senior physicist for the proton therapy will provide oversight, evaluate and set standards for the proton therapy treatments, including the following responsibilities:


• Work closely with Varian to contribute to the successful installation, acceptance testing and commissioning the proton therapy system equipment.
• Assist the proton therapy program in obtaining and maintaining relevant licenses, permits, accreditations and other authorizations required to operate the machine.
• Provide consultative services to the radiation oncologists regarding proton therapy patient treatments.
• Provide all aspects of medical physics support to the operation of proton therapy including continuous quality assurance of the proton machine.
• Participate and assist in the preparation of proton treatment, including image acquisitions, treatment planning, evaluation and verification of treatment plans, supervise the treatment delivery as necessary.
• Supervise and collaborate with the proton dosimetrists on all aspects dosimetric procedures, liaison with all relevant entities in the department to facilitate the process of proton therapy treatment delivery.
• Assist in the development and review of policies and procedures for the proton therapy program.
• Assist the efforts to prioritize clinical physics research efforts within the proton therapy program.
• Actively participate in the publication of peer-reviewed publications and national and international presentations demonstrating appropriate scientific method, analysis and evaluation of results of particle therapy problems.
• Participate in the resident and medical physics graduate program teaching program including didactic lecturing and hands-on instructions as appropriate for academic level.
• Participate in the academic activities including graduate teaching, post-graduate mentoring and research activities in proton therapy as appropriate and directed by Chief of Medical Physics.
• Provide occasional support for coverage of other external beam procedures as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):
PhD Degree in medical physics, engineering or related field with at least 2 years post-degree clinical medical physics experience and ABR (or equivalent) certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics.
