POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Program Director is a member of the full-time Faculty who also holds an administrative appointment related to assisting with the management of a specific academic program or set of academic programs. Responsibilities include: classroom instruction, day-to-day program operations, assisting students toward successful program completion, assisting with the management of Faculty, promoting the academic well-being of the program, helping to maintain/grow student enrollment, and staffing the classroom with Faculty who support the mission of South University. The Assistant Program Director also participates in activities that promote the stature of the academic programs, Departments, and Colleges and abides by the mandates set by the South University Board of Trustees and Administration. Incumbent must assure that the South University philosophy is considered in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position: quality services to clients; development, growth, involvement, and recognition of employees; sound economic principles; and maintenance of an environment which is conducive to innovation, positive thinking and expansion.


KEY JOB ELEMENTS:

Teaching:

  • Performs Faculty responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty job description the Faculty Supplement to the South University Employee Handbook.

  • Teaches 12 classes per academic year.

  • Designs and delivers learning-centered instruction in alignment with the South University model. For online courses, delivers the instruction as approved.

  • Relates professional/life/industry experience to learning by continuing professional/technical skills development, introducing professional/industry perspective into courses, and the remaining aware of professional/industry trends.

  • Promotes student success by showing flexibility in style and work schedule as well as exhibiting a passion for teaching and students.

  • Manages the educational process to ensure a positive educational experience.

  • Practices effective outreach to at-risk and/or absent students.

  • Communicates consistently and effectively with Supervisor(s), Faculty, and other South University Administrators.

  • Participates in the Faculty development process to enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities via learner-centered instruction.

  • Manages the learning environment through keeping accurate records and enforcing academic policies consistent with the School, Campus, or Online Division.

Faculty Service/Administration:

  • Assists with administering the program, program/department initiatives designed to achieve student outcomes, and campus/community relations.

  • Assists with training, managing, and leading a designated group of Faculty according to the policies and procedures of the University, supervising the daily operations of the Faculty.

  • Collaborates with the Program Director, Dean of Academic Affairs & Operations, and the Department Chair, along with other Program Directors at the same campus, within the department, and system-wide in support of campus and university matters.

  • Assists with investigating and resolving student and faculty problems requiring academic actions according to South University policies and procedures.

  • Assists the Program Director with remaining in compliance with South University’s academic policies and procedures, educational policies, both SACS and programmatic accreditation standards, and state agency regulations.

  • Assists with supervising the full-time and adjunct Faculty evaluation process (e.g., course observations and annual faculty evaluations).

  • Supports the curriculum development and revision/process regarding the program.

  • Assists with selecting, developing, and holding identified meetings with the Program Advisory Council (PAC), which meets at least twice per year.

  • Supports the South University Faculty development process and policies.

  • Evaluates full-time Faculty (no rank) and adjunct Faculty for additional course credentials with recommendations to the Department Chair for Online Programs.

  • Executes the full-time and adjunct Faculty evaluation process, including periodic course observations for quality assurance and annual Faculty evaluations.

  • Investigates and resolves student and Faculty educational issues requiring academic action under the direction and approval of the Program Director for Online Programs.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • MS in Sociology required.

  • Successful record of increasing responsibility or project/initiative leadership within a university or industry setting.

  • At least 1-2 years teaching experience at South University or another post-secondary education institution preferred.

  • Active, valid, and unencumbered state licensure or certification as applicable to the discipline.

  • Membership in a professional association tied to area of instruction preferred.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to build successful relationships with students and Faculty.

  • Excellent time management and detail-oriented skills.

  • Excellent critical thinking, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent teaching skills as evidenced in prior teaching evaluations.

  • Computer based skills (i.e., software, analytical, and report writing skills) and experience with computerized learning management systems.

  • Willingness to work in an accelerated learning format, working online with students five of seven days per online week.

  • Willingness to attend meetings as required by the respective department.

  • Ability to access a personal computer, Internet connection, and telephone connection. (hardware, software, and Internet access specifications to be provided) to fulfill teaching and related administrative responsibilities.

  • Online teaching experience, preferred.
