Overview

San Diego State University seeks an experienced and accomplished leader to serve as Associate Vice President for Research Advancement. Initial review of applications will begin on October 28, 2019. The AVP will lead the University’s Research Advancement team, promote SDSU’s research excellence with federal and state government; and develop and support the efforts of our faculty to pursue and win new external funding opportunities.

The AVP will be an exceptional communicator with demonstrated project management and research experience. Similarly, the AVP will need to have a proven track record with developing successful teams of researchers from diverse programs, universities and/or agencies. The position requires a practitioner with a broad interdisciplinary understanding of research and scholarship, as well as someone with the breadth of knowledge and experience to lead a team of experts.

Graduate and Research Affairs

The AVP for Research Advancement is a senior member of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Dean’s team. The Division of Graduate and Research Affairs fosters ongoing leadership, advocacy, and coordination of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research endeavors; provides oversight and management of Graduate Affairs, which oversees SDSU’s 100-plus advanced degree programs; and leads the University’s Research Advancement, Research Compliance and Technology Transfer units, as well as its Zahn Innovation Platform, a startup incubator for faculty, staff and students.

Research Advancement Group

The Research Advancement team is a unit within Graduate and Research Affairs. The Group assists faculty in identifying and developing grant proposals and areas of research growth. The unit maintains relationships with legislative offices, federal agencies and nonprofits to ensure visibility for SDSU research-active faculty.

SDSU’s Research Enterprise

In fiscal year 2018-19, SDSU’s faculty secured $148.5 million in support of their research programs. Grants from both the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation increased, as did the number of sponsors who supported the more than 300 faculty who were the recipients of external funding.

Our professors are winning NIH MERIT awards, leading national scholarly organizations like the American Anthropological Association, and receiving distinguished recognitions like Fulbright awards and AAAS Fellowships. They publish in prestigious journals including Nature, National Geographic, Astronomical Journal, and more.

SDSU is home to more than 70 organized research centers and institutes. These hubs of collaboration provide research opportunities to students and are making advances in autism, behavioral teratology, coastal and marine studies, community health, ethics and public affairs, clinical and cognitive neuroscience, heart disease, water quality, climate change, big data and more.
