Position Summary:

The School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), in a major academic unit of the University of Wisconsin - Madison, a preeminent center for discovery, learning and engagement. SMPH accounts for over one-third of the research portfolio of the university which exceeds $1b in annual sponsored program awards. The school is closely affiliated with the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics Authority ("UWHCA"), an academic health system with annual revenues in excess of $3b.

SMPH, including its faculty and staff, participate in various activities including federal and non-federal sponsored research, corporate agreements, fee-for-service agreements and other entrepreneurial activities conducted within the university. These activities involve working with multiple units of the university and health system including, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Office of Legal Affairs and Purchasing Services at the university and similar units of UWHCA. This position represents the school in a wide range of contractual and research matters and advises all departments and centers of the school on a complex array of issues. We are seeking an individual to build a contract management system including: establishing clear policies, working to educate faculty and staff on policies and processes, and providing day-to-day support in navigating the complexities of these transactions.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance/CFO of SMPH, the Director for Contracts will oversee the Research Policy Committee of the school and be responsible for both the creation and dissemination of policies, consulting with faculty, and bringing together stakeholders needed to create, review and approve complex agreements. The position will supervise an existing Contract Specialist position and will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Research and the Director of the Office of Industry Engagement.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's Degree required, advanced degree such as JD preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

-Four or more years of experience working with research and/or corporate contracting required.
-Contract experience at a major educational or healthcare institution preferred.
-Responsible for advanced level problem solving, framing of issues and advising clearly and effectively.
-Demonstrated management and leadership experience.
-Ability to create and interpret policy successfully.
-Customer service mentality.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills.
-Experience in university, state and federal fiscal and administrative rules and regulations related to both research and healthcare including, but not limited to areas such as NIH, HIPAA and Stark preferred.
-Excellent organizational and time management skills.
-Ability to build and achieve consensus in a dynamic and fluid environment.
