The Department of Engineering Technology & Construction Management at UNC Charlotte delivers five undergraduate and three graduate programs. The Department seeks applicants with the ability to effectively teach courses supporting one or more of our undergraduate programs (Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering Technology, Fire Safety Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology). In addition, the department administers the following graduate programs (Construction & Facilities Management, Applied Energy & Electromechanical Systems, and Fire Protection & Administration). Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate ability to effectively teach undergraduate courses and laboratories in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program as well as the graduate program in Applied Energy & Electromechanical Systems Engineering.

Student advising, supervision of student project teams, course assessment and other administrative assignments are also required duties.

Candidates must be able to work independently and with a diverse team; demonstrate excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills; and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment that serves a diverse student population as well as faculty, alumni, and employers. As such, candidates must be able to operate within and help create an inclusive environment that facilitates student learning and development.

Candidates must be able to develop and sustain a funded research program that supports graduate students and leads to journal publications.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Candidates with undergraduate and graduate degrees and professional experience in Mechanical, Electromechanical or Manufacturing Engineering are preferred.

This position specifically targets candidates with expertise in Mechanical / Machine Design, Rapid Prototyping & Parametric Modeling/CAD, Manufacturing, Automotive, Electromechanical Systems or related area.

Required qualifications for tenure track positions include an earned doctorate. Candidates must possess excellent leadership, organizational, teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills, and must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment that serves a diverse student population.

Relevant prior professional practice, consulting, manufacturing or industry experience is desired. Professional licensure or certification is preferred. Prior teaching experience and/or funded research is preferred.

Candidates with a proven record of scholarship and funded research may be considered for higher rank. Candidates seeking Associate Professor or higher rank should clearly indicate rank applied for and outline qualifications for that rank in the cover letter as well as provide examples of three recent publications and detailed funding record.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications

Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or other professional certification is desired.
