Founded in 1923, Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) is a public university located in Nacogdoches, Texas, and is one of four independent public universities in Texas. Though the university is located in the rural east Texas college town of Nacogdoches, the vast majority of SFA students come from the greater Houston or Dallas-Fort Worth areas. SFA has also served students from 46 states outside Texas and 42 countries outside the United States. SFA enrolls more than 13,000 students, offering 120 areas of study, including more than 80 undergraduate majors, nearly 60 graduate degrees, and three doctoral programs through its six colleges. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are members of the Southland Conference and compete in Division I for all varsity sports.

Reporting to the vice president for finance and administration, the director of human resources, is responsible for the overall operation and management of human resources in providing direction in strategic operations and planning. Work involves establishing, directing, administering, and monitoring the development and operations of the human resources office and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Leads the university-wide human resource function, including recruitment, retention, compensation administration, benefits, training and development, compliance and performance management, and policy development. Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of 11 full time human resources staff. The director oversees a budget of $900,000. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

A bachelor’s degree in business, management, or a related field and at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in human resources is required. Supervisory experience is required. A master’s degree is preferred. Experience in a management role at a major college or university is preferred. Professional in human resources (PHR), senior professional in human resources (SPHR), or other HR certification is preferred. This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check. This is an IT-sensitive position subject to the Computer and Network Security policy.
