The Internet Observatory is a bold, new cross-disciplinary program that aims to advance the state of teaching, research, and public policy on the abuse of the internet to cause harm in today's complex digital world. Based at the Freeman Spogli Institute and led by cybersecurity expert Alex Stamos, the Internet Observatory will formally launch in June 2019 with an innovative curriculum, a new research study on the 2020 elections, and engagement with government, industry and the media to impact public policy.

Reporting to the program's Director, the Social Science Research Professional will be a core team member in the design and implementation of the Internet Observatory, a Big Data repository and real-time analytics engine that will power new forms of data driven social science research. The candidate will assist in defining research questions and will work independently on defining data needs, reviewing and summarizing previous research findings, building quantitative models and metrics, and mapping/outputting multiple types of quantitative and qualitative data. The candidate will also develop new research protocols using traditional and experimental strategies and sophisticated statistical analysis tools to map and analyze large datasets. The candidate will contribute to authorship and editing of research papers, policy briefs and project reports, will supervise students, and provide basic training and mentorship in coding (Python), software tools and quantitative analysis skills and knowledge. The ideal candidate will have strong academic research skills, basic knowledge and demonstrated experience using and applying analytical software and database user interface and query software; and an ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and electronic documentation study. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in the Internet Observatory's research areas.

JOB PURPOSE:
Perform work to support research or develop public programs and policies requiring continuous exercising of independent initiative and judgment. Provide guidance to less experienced colleagues.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planning and coordinating experimental protocols.
  • Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
  • Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
  • Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Ability to work with human study participants.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
