The Department of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College (located in Ithaca, NY) seeks candidates for a three-year non-tenure-eligible position at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor in Musical Theatre: Musical Direction and Performance. Our B.F.A. in Acting and B.F.A. in Musical Theatre degrees offer the rigorous, highly-individualized training of a conservatory within the enriching foundation of a liberal arts education, designed to develop and strengthen the skills, hone the instincts, and foster the passion necessary for a professional career as a theatre artist. Ithaca College develops theatre artists who not only practice theatre but also use theatre to reflect and shape the society in which we live. We seek a dynamic teacher and pianist with excellent musicianship and professional experience as a coach and conductor responsible for at least one musical theatre production each year. Teaching responsibilities may include courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels such as:
•Musical Theatre Workshop: Repertory & Style
•Musical Theatre Workshop: Auditions and Advanced Techniques
•Fundamentals of Musical Theatre Song Performance
•Senior Ensemble (Industry Showcase)
•Introduction to Musical Theatre Performance (for non-B.F.A. Musical Theatre majors)
•American Musical Theatre History
•Musicianship for the Theatre
Other position responsibilities include coaching and accompanying musical theatre majors in preparation for showcase, vocal juries, and singing reviews, recommending appropriate repertoire, tutoring in theory/music theory/musicianship, and providing conducting and orchestra leadership for production by collaborating with directors, designers, stage managers, and artists in a robust production program. This position participates in the life of the department by pre-screening and auditioning/accompanying prospective students, advising majors, assisting with Showcase material preparation for seniors, accompanying at general auditions, and serving on appropriate committees in the practice of shared governance.

Position/Job Qualifications

Terminal degree in appropriate discipline (such as an M.M. or M.F.A.) is required, although candidates without the degree, who possess significant professional experience in musical direction, may be considered. The ideal candidate will possess a foundation of training and expertise as a musician/pianist; significant professional musical theatre performance experience, a strong interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students and graduate students in the M.M. program in Opera and Musical Theatre Conducting, comprehensive knowledge of the musical theatre canon, skills as a coach using sound vocal technique as established by the voice faculty of the School of Music, collegiate-level teaching experience or the professional equivalent, excellent musicianship and sight-reading skills, and comprehensive knowledge of the musical theatre repertoire; experience as a coach/conductor for musical theater productions. Must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures, and have strong organizational and time management skills.
