The Biological Sciences Department is an energetic academic department with 15 tenured/tenure-track faculty committed to excellence in teaching, scholarly productivity, and involvement of undergraduates in research. To support this commitment, our typical classroom teaching responsibilities are only nine contact hours per week. Our flagship department is in an exciting time of growth with five new tenure-track faculty members added just within the last four years. The College is a popular choice for New York State residents, but also draws students from all 50 states and has a growing international student population. SUNY Cortland strives to attract culturally diverse faculty who can contribute to a campus that embraces diversity, practices inclusion, and fosters a supportive environment for all individuals in the academic community. Biological Sciences resides in a recently renovated building with modern microscopy, cellular and molecular facilities, a new greenhouse complex, research animal care facility, and individual faculty research laboratories. Opportunities exist for productive research collaborations with other institutions in our area (Cornell University, Binghamton University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Syracuse University).
Major ResponsibilitiesParticipate in teaching the Human Anatomy and Physiology course sequence for non-majors, offer an elective that complements the curriculum of the department and strengthens the biomedical science (BMS) major. Contribute in the teaching of required BMS seminar courses and in the management of off-campus BMS student internships. Develop and maintain an active research program involving undergraduates that has the potential for external funding. Provide service to the department and College, including advising and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and varied skill and ability levels.
Functional and Supervisory RelationshipsThe Assistant Professor will mentor undergraduate students in research, supervise internships, participate in service activities for the department and campus community, and advise students in the Biological Sciences. The new faculty member will report directly to the Chair of the Biological Sciences Department in the School of Arts and Sciences.
Required QualificationsPhD in biology or a related field whose area of expertise complements the existing research foci of the department and is relevant to the biomedical sciences; evidence of teaching undergraduates in the classroom; evidence of scholarly productivity with peer-reviewed publications and a detailed plan for engaging undergraduates in the research.
Preferred QualificationsPreference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral experience, and to candidates who are committed to promoting an environment of equity, inclusion, and social justice.
