Job Description

 

Northern Arizona University (NAU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Engineering, Informatics and Applied Sciences (CEIAS). We seek a dynamic, creative and strategic leader to serve as Dean of CEIAS, our newest of seven academic colleges at NAU. The Dean of the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will develop productive working relationships with institutional administration, faculty, and students, as well as alumni, industry, and community partners.

 

The Dean will be responsible for:

  • Vision and Planning: create a vision and strategic plan for the college that aligns with the institutional goals and strategic plan.
  • Fiduciary Decisions: manage the budget and other resources.
  • College Administration: appoint department chairs, school directors, and college administrators, and periodically review the performance of chairs, directors, and administrators in concert with the Provost.
  • Personnel: oversee hiring; establish job titles and salaries; make decisions and review policies regarding renewal, tenure, promotion, and dismissal; authorize faculty leave; review faculty annual evaluations; promote departmental mentoring and development opportunities; and support professional development of faculty and staff.
  • Educational Leadership: provide leadership and vision for new and continuing academic programs, considering innovation, cost effectiveness, market demand, fidelity to standards and accreditation; establish and maintain high academic standards; ensure effective student quality, recruitment and retention.
  • Development: contribute to development and fulfillment of fundraising priorities; participate in comprehensive capital campaign initiatives.
  • College Governance: create ad hoc committees of the collegiate faculty; hear faculty grievances; promote academic freedom and responsibility; ensure that the college provides a diverse, opportunity- and perspective-rich environment; promote and support shared governance.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: foster diversity and inclusivity among students, faculty and staff.
  • Outreach: participate in various councils, commissions, and committees as set forth in university policy; represent the college within state and national boards and organizations, and other appropriate groups; effectively demonstrate a commitment to Northern Arizona University core values and engage the college in the campus, state and national communities.

College Resources

CEIAS supports approximately 112 faculty and staff who serve over 2,800 students. Our faculty members are rapidly accelerating their engagement in impactful research, and the College currently supports ~$6M in annual research expenditures. CEIAS is home to the departments of Applied Physics and Materials Science (APMS); Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Engineering (CECMEE); Mechanical Engineering (ME); the School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems (SICCS); and the Center for Materials Interfaces in Research and Applications (MIRA). The college supports ABET-accredited bachelor’s degrees in computer science, and civil, environmental, mechanical, computer, and electrical engineering; an ACCE-accredited degree in construction management; and degrees in applied computer science, informatics, and physics. The college supports nine undergraduate majors, six master’s programs and four Ph.D. programs, and new programs are planned for the future.

 


Minimum Qualifications

  • Have earned a doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines of the College, including engineering, computer science, material science, physics or informatics, or in a closely related field.
  • Have a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and leadership that warrants a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor.
  • Have demonstrated successful administrative leadership experience in higher education as a dean, associate dean, chair, center or institute leader, or comparable position with responsibilities that included budgets, strategic planning, personnel management, performance reviews, promotion and tenure decisions; and experience in a leadership role in the ABET accreditation process.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in leadership and administration of complex and interdisciplinary academic units of relevant size and structure to the College, and in management of diverse types of faculty and staff.
  • Successful record of educational leadership and vision in academic programming; experience developing and sustaining high quality, student-centered coursework and curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; practiced consideration of innovation, cost effectiveness, and high academic standards; oversight of effective student quality, recruitment, enrollment growth and retention initiatives; and experience with accreditation and program review.
  • Established record of competitive scholarship and the acquisition and management of extramural funding.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in donor development, alumni engagement, and fundraising activities.
  • Demonstrated strengths in effective communication, mentoring, consensus building, shared governance, and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.

 

 


General Information

Located in Flagstaff, a scenic town of 70,000 nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, NAU has seen tremendous growth in its student population and its research and creative scholarship agenda. Today, NAU serves more than 31,000 students across 20 statewide locations and online. Almost 23,000 students attend the Flagstaff Mountain campus, recognized as the “3rd Best College Town in the U.S.” by the American Institute for Economic Research’s 2017 College Destinations Index. NAU is one of the top 200 institutions ranked by NSF for non-medical school research expenditures, with institutional research expenditures of over $46M reported for FY17. Background Information

 

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

 

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

This is an Administrator (ADM) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Administrators are hired on a contract basis renewable each year according to terms of the Conditions of Administrative Service. These terms can be found on the Arizona Board of Regents website.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
