The College of New Jersey's Office of Instructional Design reports to Academic Affairs and provides resources to faculty who want to integrate technology in teaching and learning for face-to-face, blended and online courses. This is accomplished through guided instruction via one-on-one meetings, group workshops, and online training on pedagogical as well as technical issues.

Overview:

The College of New Jersey is seeking an Instructional Designer that will provide guidance and support for faculty colleagues on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. They will collaborate with faculty colleagues to create engaging learning activities, design online and technology enhanced courses, create and facilitate faculty development programming in technology best practices and develop resources that support teaching online or technology-enhanced courses. The successful candidate will possess an in-depth knowledge of the pedagogical practices that support technology-enhanced and online learning, as well as experience with a wide range of learning technologies that support high-quality teaching and learning in online environments. The continuous learning and dissemination of knowledge of the latest proven tools and techniques by the Instructional Designer will be essential in order foster the highest possible level of proficiency among faculty members.

The Instructional Designer will oversee one or more undergraduate student workers that will assist the Instructional Designer and will report to the Associate Director for the Office of Instructional Design.

Duties include, but are not limited to:



  • Collaborate with faculty to create engaging learning activities through the design of online and technology enhanced course.
  • Develop resources that support teaching online or technology-enhanced courses.
  • Plan and conduct workshops and hands-on training for faculty and staff.
  • Assist project teams in the evaluation and deployment of new systems and resources.
  • Assist with and performing regular needs assessments and research as it relates to instructional technology and design. Includes, but not limited to, software applications/platforms, course design, collaboration tools, quizzing, grade books, assessment and evaluation.
  • Take a lead role in the implementation of measuring successfulness of online/blended courses.
  • Provide support for the online learning management systems and other instructional technologies.
Qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional technology, instructional design, or education preferred, with at least 5 years of experience working in instructional technology, teaching and learning with technology, or a directly related field; or, an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
  • Knowledge of online program quality measurement schemes such as the OLC Quality Scorecard, the QM Rubric, or other similar models
  • Lesson and curriculum planning skills
  • Solid knowledge of course development software, learning management systems (Canvas preferred); web conferencing systems, screen/lecture capture systems, basic video production, video file repositories and content management systems, assessment systems, basic web site maintenance systems, HTML, MS Office, Google
  • Visual design skills and ability to storyboard
  • Proficiency providing technical training and instruction, both group and individualized
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts
  • Ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities and projects;
  • Ability to collaborate across functional divisions;
  • Commitment to learning and adapting cutting edge technologies for support of online and hybrid education
  • Soft skills, including running meetings, making presentations, coaching, and negotiating;
  • Strong service ethic and customer service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
Preferred qualifications include:

  • Master's or advanced degree
  • Previous professional teaching and training experience
  • Ability to work with and train in both a PC and Macintosh environments
  • Knowledge and experience in the educational applications of social media technologies
  • Active participation in professional organizations and professional development programs relevant to the position.
The state title for this position is Professional Services Specialist 2. It is included for membership in the American Federations of Teachers (AFT) bargaining unit. The starting salary for this position is step 1, range 24 $ 60,667.50. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and prescription, as well as generous sick and vacation leave.
