Rich in tradition, uncompromisingly committed to excellence in academic Obstetrics and Gynecology and endowed with gifted and dedicated faculty and trainees, Penn Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics was originally established in 1810 and merged with the Department of Gynecology in 1927. The Department is a national leader in women’s health and strives to provide comprehensive high quality, patient-centered care and improve the health of women and their children through its translational and clinical research programs. In addition to providing obstetrical and routine gynecologic care, Penn Ob/Gyn has unique programs focused on diabetes in pregnancy, preterm birth, PCOS, fertility preservation for cancer patients and women choosing to delay child-bearing, reproductive health care for the LGBTQ community, male and female fertility, pelvic health and urinary incontinence, family planning and cancer care. The Department continues to expand its clinical programs, leveraging technology and incorporating innovative approaches to improve health care delivery, and implement continuous quality improvement processes.

The Department has a long tradition of excellence in patient care, residency and fellowship training, and research on women’s health and reproduction. Its training programs have an excellent reputation for providing a wide range of clinical experiences treating a diverse population of women. The faculty is committed to training the next generation of specialists, sub-specialists and physician-investigators in obstetrics and gynecology. The Department is closely aligned with the Center for Research on Reproduction and Women’s Health in addition to key partnerships with the Musculoskeletal Institute, Immunology Institute, Cardiovascular Institute, Epigenetics Program, Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology, Transplant Institute, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Penn CHOP Microbiome Center, Cell and Developmental Biology and the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Chair of the Department directs 74 faculty members, nearly 400 professional and support staff and oversees 8 outpatient facilities housing 12 specialty practices. Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and Chester County Hospital, institutions of great distinction and diversity. The practice has over 195,000 outpatient visits a year, with more than 86,000 active patients. In FY 2019, the department admitted approximately 4,700 inpatients, with over 4,100 deliveries. The practice is a component of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine’s 18 clinical departments.

Qualified candidates are those who hold MD or MD/PhD degrees and qualify for faculty appointment as Associate or Professor level in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Applicants must be a respected active practitioner with a distinguished national/international record of research.

Candidates must possess dynamic leadership skills, administrative expertise, and a clear commitment to the education, sponsorship, and mentorship of students, residents, fellows and faculty. The applicant must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, as well as with the larger research community on campus, and to promote outreach to the community. The candidate should articulate a compelling vision for the future of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the role of a clinical department within a highly integrated academic medical center and the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology in general. A strong interest in fundraising is desirable.

We seek candidates who embrace the value of diversity in the delivery of patient care and the enhancement of innovation in research.

The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/Women/Individuals with disabilities/Protected Veterans are encouraged to apply.
