General Description / Primary Purpose

The Coordinator Residence Life, under the direction of an Assistant Director or above, assists in the design, development and implementation of departmental processes and/or programs. Recommends policies and procedures to ensure effective coordination of departmental programs.

Essential Duties

Job Function

The Coordinator is responsible for directing the daily operation of one housing area (up to 900 residents) including a variety of functions: training and supervision of a Residence Assistant staff (6-16 para-professionals); serves as a hearing administrator for residential student conduct; supervises programming and community development; mediates conflict and responds to crisis situations; advises and counsel residents; oversees administrative procedures, policies, and personnel for their assigned area; and maintains communication with supervisors on a 24 hour/7 days a week basis through telephone and e-mail. This position requires an enthusiastic, creative, self-motivated person with excellent interpersonal skills, willing to work in an environment requiring strong emphasis on providing superior customer service in conformance with the university’s mission and values. The Department of Housing & Residence Life is an integral part of the Division of Student and International Affairs, and as such, is measure by it’s ability to successfully interact with students and to assist with their individual needs and concerns. To this end, the Coordinator will often be required to demonstrate a caring and patient attitude, utilize conflict resolution skills, and to ensure that every effort is made to create satisfied students and their families. This position is designated as a Tier 2 respondent for designated campus emergencies and events. In the event of a declared campus emergency, the position incumbent will make every effort to return to campus when directed.

Marginal Functions

May serve on a variety of University of North Florida committees representing the interests of the department and the division; may travel to professional conferences; provides support to functions of the department which have university wide significance (i.e. events which are cosponsored by the Division of Student and International Affairs); and attends university events as required.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization; or a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and two years of experience directly related to the job functions.

Faculty Position Required QualificationsDepartmental Requirements

This is a live-in position and as such, requires the Coordinator to live on-campus in the one bedroom apartment provided by the department and to adhere to the policies established for the full time Residence Life Coordinator Staff. There are evening, weekend, and holiday responsibilities including, but not limited to, participation at meetings, programs, university events, and on-call duty rotation.

The position of Coordinator requires the ability to review written documents, manuals, journals and publications; operate office equipment including printer/duplicating equipment as well as being able to assist others in doing so. Requires abilities sufficient to monitor and inspect Housing facilities, respond to emergencies, recognize fire alarms, recognize facial features for security purposes, and inspect Housing facilities for safety violations, structural integrity, cleanliness and suitability for habitation. Must have the ability to identify potential safety hazards such as obstructed stairwells, missing smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, loose railings, cracked sidewalks and landings, and to be able to monitor adherence to rules and policies as published in The Resident Handbook. Must have sufficient abilities to provide clear instructions and directions in emergency situations where rapid and clear communication is essential. In addition, must be able to provide clear and comprehensible communications as related to staff selection, training, and supervision, interaction with parents, students, faculty, staff and other community members in person, in writing, via radio, on the telephone, and in enforcing rules, regulations and safety functions. Must be able to ascend stairways to gain access to 2nd and 3rd story apartments (no elevator available), ascend narrow spiral stairways to gain access to loft bedroom units.

Campus Security Authority (CSA) This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). This position has been designated as a CSA because it involves significant responsibility for student and campus activities and/or responsibility for campus security. As such, any person in this position must report to the University Police Department a crime or an incident that might be a crime that he/she becomes aware of. This position has a reporting requirement because the University believes that your responsibility for students, campus activities and/or campus security will make you someone members of the University community will see as an authority figure and someone to whom they can seek help. A CSA is not expected to investigate or determine whether a criminal incident actually took place. A CSAs responsibility is a duty to report. All positions designated as CSAs are required to complete an online or in-person training session. The holder of this position is designated as a “Responsible Employee” pursuant to their role under Title IX. Therefore, the incumbent must promptly report allegations of sexual misconduct, sexual violence, and child sexual abuse by or against any student, employee, contractor, or visitor to the University’s Title IX Administrator or any divisional Title IX Coordinator.
