  • Position Description

    The primary function of the Risk Specialist position is to manage the day-to-day activities of all risk management activities as they relate to the Main Campus. This task also includes: interaction between the Ohio BWC, our TPA and MCO; facilitating the Main Campus transitional/modified duty program; analyzing and investigating injury reports for compensability; assisting our legal counsel at the Industrial Commission; reviewing claims for settlement potential; making recommendations to Safety for training based on injury trends; and updating HR personnel on work comp leaves of absence. These loss control efforts have a dramatic impact on the university’s goal of reducing workers’ compensation costs.

    This position also assists the Administrator for Risk Management with the risk management program by conducting motor vehicle record checks to determine insurability of individuals driving University vehicles and coordinating auto insurance claims. The position also assists in the property insurance program by coordinating property loss control surveys and property damage claims. Assistance is also provided with general liability claims and producing certificates of insurance.

    Risk specialist also works with campus stakeholders on issues of event risk management review and works closely with Student Life, Safety Office, Security, Human Resources, Legal and other campus departments to better improve the University risk profile.

    Qualifications:

    Education/experience/licensing:

    • A four year baccalaureate degree, preferably with emphasis in business, human resources or risk management is preferred.
    • Equivalent experience in lieu of specific education emphasis such as 3-5 years as an insurance administrator and/or experience with a major carrier and/or brokeror risk analyst is acceptable.
    • Certification such as Certified Workers’ Compensation Professional (CWCP) and/or ARM is highly desirable.
    • Computer proficiency including research and analysis, word processing, spreadsheets, and internet resources is necessary.
    • A strong, demonstrated background of effective “customer service” type communication is needed.

    Communication and other skills:

    • The ability to communicate effectively with people cannot be over-emphasized.
    • Must be able to deal with highly stressful situations.
    • Must be able to communicate in a skilled manner with .all levels of the institution.

    Working Conditions:Works in a professional office environment with possible high stress levels and is subject to occasional adversarial encounters. Position is mostly sedentary in nature. Frequent travel between University campuses and the Ohio Industrial Commission is required.
