Position Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer of Ambulatory Services and the Chief Nursing Officer, has the responsibility for coordination and supervision of nursing care and all related activities of the ambulatory practices. He or she plays an important role in occupational health, staffing, quality assurance, infection control and risk management. He or she analyzes and evaluates nursing services to improve the quality care given, participates in research to improve patient care, and maintains policies that adhere to federal and state regulations. 

Duties of a Director of Nursing for Ambulatory Services may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Plans, designs, implements, and managesstandards of practice of the RN, LPN, and MA and clinical roles for ambulatoryservices. 
  • Ensures staff meet established state/locallegislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that departments have an ongoing qualityimprovement program which examines consistent nursing and clinical practice,validating outcomes by research and data collection.
  • Evaluates the current practice, initiates newnursing roles and clinical roles and assists in establishing training programsto support the expanded roles.
  • Orientates and trains new employees to their jobresponsibilities.
  • Facilitates interdisciplinary communication ofpertinent information to health care professionals regarding patient careservices.
  • Maintains compliance with and prepares forregulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Conducts human resources activities such asevaluating, disciplining and counseling employees.
  • Represents the Ambulatory Nursing perspective atall levels of the organization, sharing best practices and resources.


Required Qualifications: Current NYS Registered Nurse License;Master’s Degree in Nursing or Health related field; Minimum three (3) years ofprevious nursing administration experience required.


PreferredQualifications: 2years’ experience in Ambulatory Services setting, specialty certification, Workingknowledge of regulatory requirements
