Job Summary

This is an emergency essential position.

This employee's main role is to assist in leading and training the shift team in the performance of their duties while performing custodial work themselves. The person must be of high integrity and be willing to assume the responsibility of leading the crew when the supervisor is off work. They must always strive to set a good example for others to follow and be able to interface effectively with both workers and management.

An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks in connection with cleaning functions. Work involves the use of custodial supplies and modern cleaning equipment, and may involve the moving and lifting of heavy furniture. Work is performed in accordance with a well-established routine, and is subject to inspection during progress or upon completion for attainment of established standards of cleanliness.

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's license.
  • Must pass Basic and Advanced Custodial Technician training courses through Cleaning Management Institute within the six month probationary period.
  • Minimum of 1 year of custodial service.
  • Demonstrated mastery of all the materials, methods, cleaning procedures and practices used in custodial work on campus.
  • Can competently operate and care for vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machine, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  • Can follow oral and written instructions from a supervisor or manager with minimal remedial explanations.
  • Understands the proper cleaning materials and methods for the safe and effective cleaning of different types of building surfaces.
  • Ability to lead a small crew or sometimes an entire shift of custodians in the absence of the supervisor to ensure work gets done on campus.
  • Sufficient physical strength to perform custodial tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to email and access university information online with minimal assistance from supervisor or manager.
  • Be able to read and interpret chemical labeling, directions for use and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of custodial service at Kutztown University in good standing with no disciplinary issues

Comprising five colleges - Visual and Performing Arts, Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies - Kutztown University offers a diverse range of excellent academic programs to prepare individuals for successful careers.

Located on 325 acres in Kutztown (population:4,500), the university is 20 miles from both Reading and Allentown, 90 miles from Philadelphia and 100 miles from New York City. LVI International Airport is 25 minutes from campus. Currently, 10,193 students are enrolled at the university from 26 states and 51 nations. About half of the undergraduates live in residence halls; the rest live at home or in nearby apartments.
