Position Summary

The NYU Tandon School of Engineering is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of the VR/AR Lab, a New York City seeded initiative whose goal is to make New York City the capital of Virtual and Augmented Reality through a focus on education, job creation, venture formation and growth, new business and research. The lab will have a central hub with satellite locations. The burgeoning field of VR/AR will allow the center to partner with business across several sectors.

 

The Center will capitalize on the ideas produced by our university partners (Columbia, Lehman College, The New School, and others), corporate partners, and startup companies. It will work with existing industries as they evolve and innovate and will support our communities with the goal of connecting as many New Yorkers to opportunity as possible and making NYC a prime destination for entrepreneurs, corporations, and investors from around the globe seeking to engage with VR and AR.

 

The Executive Director will serve as the Center’s most publicly visible executive and will be in charge of all programs, staff and operations of the Center and will have responsibility for achieving revenue and program outcome targets. He/she will be accountable for the strategic and day to day operation of the Center, and provide leadership on research direction, corporate innovation programs, education programs, and entrepreneurship and prototype programs. The role also has a strong external-facing function and is accountable for realizing the full potential of business development opportunities for the Center including industry partnerships, project-based services, and ongoing expansion of the Center’s business and funding model. The Executive Director will work closely with the Center’s staff to shape programs and services to meet stakeholder and market needs.

 

The role requires a creative and strategic individual who, together with senior management, will draft and execute proposals and plans and pursue opportunities. The Executive Director will establish and maintain high-caliber, productive business relationships within overlapping sectors that will include media, technology and public interest stakeholders; and tech entrepreneurs. New business leads, increases in the Center’s capacity, and advancement of the Institute’s reputation as the leading virtual and augmented reality applied research & commercialization center in the world are among the desired outcomes.

 

The ideal candidate will be a tactical risk-taker, succeed in a results-driven culture and share a passion for innovation in media and technology. The Executive Director will thrive in a small, collaborative environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork in service to the public and private partners of the Center.

Qualifications

Required Education:Bachelor’s DegreePreferred Education:Master’s DegreeRequired Experience:• 5-7 years proven track record of management experience, including day-to-day operations and supervisory responsibility, in a nonprofit or a company; preferably some startup experience.

 

• Successful track record of operating successful organizations, including generating new business leads, fundraising, and resource development.

 

• Experience in emerging media and technology industries.

 

• Command of virtual and augmented reality technology and ecosystem.Preferred Experience:• 7-10 years proven track record of management experience, including day-to-day operations and supervisory responsibility, in a nonprofit or a company; preferably some startup experience.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:• Familiarity with applied research, technology commercialization, business models, entrepreneurship and early stage venture formation.

 

• Strong prospecting and closing skills, skilled at selling to customer needs. Established contacts from within and across the media, technology and nonprofit sectors.

 

• Demonstrated leadership and social savvy, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 

• Goal-oriented with disciplined time management skills.
