DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 500+ full-time salaried faculty members and 150+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 800+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers.

There are over 250 clinical faculties practicing at multiple sites and hospitals. Professional fee billings for the department exceed $50 million with collections of over $19 million per year. The total annual budget is approximately $200 million, which includes contract and grant revenues, clinical practice and medical center funds, and other state and private endowment funds.

Under supervision, assist with performing studies on human and rodent samples from multiple projects, using standard protocol for RNA/DNA isolation, ELISAs and multiplex assays, PCR/q-PCR/qRT-PCR, preparing RNA and DNA libraries for next generation sequencing, and protocols for histology and immunohistochemistry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years of college level coursework and/or one (1) year of basic laboratory experience including courses in biology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to keep accurate data. Demonstrated experience in following step wise experimental protocols.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with rodents including performing necropsies and processing rodent tissues for frozen or paraffin storage.

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment. Accurately document research procedures in optimal procedures for histochemical and immunohistochemical assays.

  • Proven ability to assist in the writing of papers for publication, research proposals. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Strong computer skills with ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Photoshop.

  • Proven ability measuring and weighing chemicals, preparing solutions and serial dilutions; and knowledge and ability to prepare a variety of reagents, media, and buffers.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items such as gloves, lab coats and goggles.

  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance, including organization, cleaning, maintaining supply stocks, and appropriate disposal of waste.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of with handling small rodents, preferable mice. Knowledge of performing techniques related to mouse experiments.
