Play Reading Book Club Teaching Artist

ArtsEmerson seeks self-motivated, enthusiastic local theatre artist (actor, director, playwright, dramaturge, etc.) who is passionate about the exploration of theatre as an art form and literary experience to serve as teaching artists for our pioneering neighborhood-based audience engagement initiative, the Play Reading Book Club (PRBC). Now in its 6th year, the PRBC is a theatre literacy initiative that creates a space for audiences to deeply engage with theatre on both a textual and artistic level. Over a series of 4-5 weekly sessions, participants gather at various community partner sites to read, explore, interpret, see and stage readings of plays in our 2019/20 season.

  • Facilitate the Play Reading Book Club by guiding in-depth discussion on the play's dramaturgical elements, including; historical context, character development, creativity and structure.
  • Attend a special orientation and training session with program coordinator and director.
  • Be knowledgeable of the play and generate weekly lesson plans based on curriculum benchmarks.
  • Work with ArtsEmerson engagement team and marketing staff to gather resources for each session.
  • Take attendance at each session.
  • Submit weekly teaching artist site reports.
  • Accompany the PRBC members to see the play at ArtsEmerson on designated PRBC Nights.
  • Direct the final staged reading of the play in preparation for the community showcase.
  • Complete a program evaluation at the end of the PRBC.
  • Participants in the PRBC come from diverse backgrounds and represent a multi-generational audience. Teaching artists should be prepared with an array of ways to engage and facilitate conversations among diverse communities.


Qualifications/Experience:

Directing experience:
  • Dramaturgy experience
  • Community engagement/outreach experience
  • Knowledge of and practice in Applied Theatre methods
  • Experience teaching an array of age groups
  • Familiarity with plays in the ArtsEmerson season
  • Must be willing to travel to various neighborhoods throughout Boston and beyond


Program Structure:
PRBC sessions meet over a period of 4-5 weekly sessions and feature the following activities:

--SESSION 1: Participants read the play out loud in a group setting. The reading of the play is followed by a discussion facilitated by the teaching artist.
--SESSION 2: Participants discuss the dramaturgical and production elements of the play, such as themes, historic content, character development, play structure, playwright's inspiration, staging choices, casting, etc. This a a deepening of the previous sessions, again led by the teaching artist.
--SESSION 3: Participants attend a performance of the play at ArtsEmerson, followed by a post-show discussion with artists, members of the production team and theatre staff.
--SESSION 4: Participants construct and rehearse their own version of the play in preparation for the final public sharing event.
--SESSION 5: Participants stage their own reading of the play to which they invite friends and family, followed by refreshments and a discussion of their experience in the PRBC.
