ROLE of the POSITION

The Privacy Officer is responsible for oversight of UNLV’s information privacy program including daily operations of the program; development, implementation, and maintenance of policies and procedures; monitoring program compliance to ensure information privacy in the university environment; responding to information privacy incidents; and other activities that safeguard the privacy of protected information.

The Privacy Officer is designated to meet UNLV’s requirement for a privacy official under HIPAA. UNLV is a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). NSHE is a hybrid entity under HIPAA in which UNLV has health care components including the UNLV School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, Student Wellness, and entities offering counseling and psychological services as well as athletic training. The Privacy Officer is responsible for privacy programs that meet UNLV’s privacy requirements under other state and federal statutes including FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), GLBA (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act), and ECPA (Electronic Communications Privacy Act).

The Privacy Officer works with senior leadership, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and other information security specialists, general counsel, compliance officers, and research administration staff to foster a culture of broad campus involvement in the adoption of effective ways to ensure information privacy. The Privacy Officer develops and continuously updates the information privacy program based on a foundation of strong policies, clearly articulated procedures, and appropriate monitoring and enforcement mechanisms for institutional activities that involve the creation, collection, analysis, and transfer of information subject to privacy protections.

The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert on privacy matters, maintains up-to-date knowledge of rapidly changing applicable state, federal, and international privacy laws, and provides training and awareness programs regarding the rights and responsibilities surrounding information privacy to a broad range of university constituents.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and 5 years of related experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
