Department Description

The Department of Genetics is one of the Basic Sciences Departments within the School of Medicine. The primary mission of this Department is research and teaching. A faculty member heads each of the research labs. The teaching centers on graduate and medical students in the field of genetics and genomics.

The primary purpose of the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences is to expand and integrate this working environment. By spanning the breadth of genomic research on the UNC campus, the CCGS provides the framework for an interdisciplinary network of faculty whose work will be synergistic. The goal is to translate genomic advances into cutting edge science, to advance the practical application of genomic research to medicine and to define social, legal and business policies as we look to the future.

Position Description

As the initial contact person for all studies entering the lab, this individual will assist with the drop off/check in process, field phone calls and emails and answer issue or direct them to a better resource at the HTSF. This will require to work closely with the lab managers, use of in house developed databases will be taught to the admin assistant.

Although a science background is not necessary for this position, it can be helpful. HTSF can teach the selected candidate what he/she needs to know to be effective in their interactions with a study group. Any detailed questions from studies can be referred to more experienced HTSF senior staff. The field is rapidly changing with the development of new technologies which the HTSF continues to develop, initiate and offer as service. This requires continual updates to the HTSF website to keep it current. The selected candidate will need to help keep the HTSF website up to date, help develop documents for distribution to studies, assist in seminar and workshop organization/ development and maintain records within the databases for each study’s samples.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The selected candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. He/she must be able to work in a high pressure and in a diverse environment. This individual must be flexible, collaborative, yet able to work effectively with a high degree of independence. Strong organizational skills is essential for this role. Must have knowledge of such software/programs as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred BS degree in Biology or other Biological sciences and/or lab experience and administrative experience
