Nature of Work:   This is afull-time (40 hours per week) Professional Research Assistant (PRA) position atthe Colorado Center for Transplantation Care, Research and Education (CCTCARE)in the Department of Surgery, University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Center(AMC), Aurora, Colorado. Theemployee will work in the CCTCARE laboratory with Dr. Ronald G. Gill’s labpersonnel. He/she will interact principally with the senior research associate.The position is not eligible for tenure.  Professional Field:  Basic Research 

Supervision Received: This positionreports to the hiring authority Ronald G. Gill, Ph.D. and Marilyne Coulombe,Ph.D.  Supervision will include trainingand oversight for the position’s responsibilities.


Duties and Responsibilities:  This is a position requiring interest inmedical research, the ability to be self-directed and detail-oriented, withstrong communication and interpersonal skills. This position entails theexecution of in vivo and in vitro experiments as they relate torodent pancreatic islet transplantation.  Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Breeding,record keeping and cellular/molecular phenotyping of several geneticallymanipulated mouse strains.
  • Performinggeneral lab duties such as tissue culture, PCR, reagent preparation andequipment maintenance.
  • Executionof in vitro immunological techniquessuch as flow cytometry, mixed lymphocyte cultures, cytotoxicity assays andELISA.
  • Renalsubcapsular transplantation of islets into diabetic mice, murine skin transplantationand treatment of recipient mice with various therapeutic reagents. 
  • Post-transplantassessment of graft function and documenting results.
  • Theisolation of pancreatic islets of Langerhans from mice
  • Providingassistance to other lab personnel when necessary

WorkingConditions:  This position works Monday-Friday and will belocated at the Barbara Davis Center Building on the University of Colorado,Anschutz Medical Center campus in Aurora, CO.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science orBachelor of Arts degree in biological sciences.

  • Accurate record keeping, goodorganizational and quantitative skills.


  • Relevant researchlaboratory experience.

  • Experience with animalhandling, flow cytometry, ELISA and PCR is preferred.

  • Proficient computerskills and experience with various software programs in Microsoft Office arenecessary.  Statistical softwareexperience/proficiency a plus.

  • An ability to work bothindependently and as a member of a research team.

  • Motivated, reliable and willing tobe supervised and taught new research techniques.

  • Master’s degree or course work inbiological sciences is a plus.
