Nature of Work

TheDepartment of Ophthalmology seeks a full-time (1.O FTE) cell culture technician(Professional Research Assistant) to assist with investigator initiated projectsin the areas of retinal biology and stem cell technologies. The successfulcandidate will join the Retinal Development and Translational Technologieslaboratory, within the context of the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program,a cross-disciplinary team of investigators working in a highly collaborativeenvironment with the common goal of developing novel stem cell-basedtherapeutics to treat ocular diseases.


Themain responsibilities for this position include stem cell culture,differentiation and maintenance, and contribution to research on retinaldevelopment and disease using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derivedretinal organoids.

 Supervision Received

The positionreports to Natalia Vergara, PhD, Assistant Professor, and receives generaldirection and training in carrying out duties and responsibilities by the PIand laboratory manager.

Theresponsibilities for this position include but are not limited to thefollowing:

  • Culture,maintenance and expansion of human iPS cells
  • Qualitycontrol of hiPSC lines and cultures
  • Differentiationor 3D retinal organoids from hiPS cells
  • Contributeto research projects led by other investigators, by assisting in specifictechniques
  • Helpwith day to day laboratory maintenance
  • Participate in lab meetings and attend scientific seminars when appropriate.



QualificationsMinimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a biomedical science discipline
  • One year of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Experience with cell culture techniques

  • PreferredQualifications:

    The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:
  • Experience in basic research in the visual sciences
  • Experience in culture of human pluripotent stem cells and their differentiation into 3D systems
