Director of Historic Preservation

The Master of Science in Historic Preservation program at theUniversity of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) invites applications for a part-time,non-tenure track Clinical Faculty to serve as Director, a .25 FTE position. Candidatesmust have an accredited degree and experience in historic preservation throughteaching or professional practice.

About the Historic Preservation Program

The Master of Science in Historic Preservation (MSHP) is a 45-credit hour program, usuallycompleted in 15 to 18 months (three regular semesters and possibly part or allof one summer). It is designed to accommodate the background and needs ofstudents with a historic preservation background as well as those new to thefield. The curriculum encompasses spatial, technical and design aspects of thefield including cultural landscapes, planning, design, building technology,project management, documentation, interpretation, and representation.

In addition to the MS in Historic Preservation, the College ofArchitecture and Planning (CAP) offers a BS in Architecture; professionalMaster’s degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and RegionalPlanning, Urban Design; and a PhD in Design and Planning. Job Responsibilities

The Director of Historic Preservation position will be responsiblefor overseeing direction, management, and strategic planning of the Master of HistoricPreservation program in the College of Architecture and Planning, University ofColorado Denver. This includes curriculum updating, providing student supportand advising, recruiting, and responsibly managing program finances. The positionwill also be engaged in teaching and research and creative work that enhancesprofessional growth. The course delivery expectations for this position will primarilybe in the Historic Preservation program, but interdisciplinary opportunitiesbased on expertise are available. 


Examples of Work Performed

  • In conjunction with the Dean of the College of Architecture and Planning, actively participate in program decision-making and planning through establishing goals, strategies, procedures, and processes for the Historic Preservation program.
  • Develop a vision for the Historic Preservation curriculum; ensure that the vision and activities are aligned with the mission of the College and contribute to program assessment efforts.
  • In collaboration with Historic Preservation faculty and Admissions Coordinator, oversee the admissions process including application review and final student decisions.
  • Coordinate course offerings, scheduling, and faculty assignments in coordination with department chairs.
  • Working with the Director of Communications and Creative Content, develop and implement strategies to communicate with existing and potential students about the Historic Preservation program.
  • Contribute to development of a marketing plan, alumni outreach strategy, website updates, and associated literature and materials for the Historic Preservation program.
  • Oversee program budget and develop strategies for revenue generation, in collaboration with the CAP Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration.

  • Candidates must have an accredited degree in architecture, landscape architecture, planning and/or urban design.
  • Demonstrated historic preservation professional experience through teaching and/or professional practice.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • University teaching experience.
