Position Description:
The Learning Specialist reports directly to the Associate Director, Academic & Student Services and in conjunction with the professional academic staff will be responsible for all learning skills programming for the athletics program. The Learning Specialist will also collaborate with multiple support service providers on campus and within athletics to develop and implement policies and programs that provide enriched student-athlete academic support. The Learning Specialist will build a program that emphasizes early identification of academic concerns, builds confidentiality safeguards, makes appropriate and effective referrals, develops needed academic support programs and monitors student-athlete progress, which fosters academic accountability. The focus will be on monitoring the successful academic and personal transition of student-athletes to a competitive, university environment and the development of self-sufficient, independent learners.

The Learning Specialist will be responsible for working jointly with relevant constituent groups and individuals in the coordination of services for students with diagnosed learning disabilities, students with learning concerns as well as students who need academic skills enhancement. Additionally, in cooperation with the Athletics Peer Learning Lab, the Learning Specialist will work with the Manager of the Athletics Peer Learning Lab to create training programs for the peer learning facilitators working for the lab. The Learning Specialist will also coordinate the training and learning strategies meetings for the academic mentors.

Each academic year, the Learning Specialist will review and suggest appropriate support for students with diagnosed learning disabilities and students with learning concerns. In addition, a caseload will be determined and the Learning Specialist will serve as the lead person for these assigned student-athletes.

Finally, the Learning Specialist will fulfill several administrative roles such as manage confidential records, evaluate program needs and effectiveness, assist with recruiting and help coordinate student-athlete orientations. The Learning Specialist will also have knowledge of NCAA, Pacific-12 Conference, UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and University policies, rules and regulations.
