Executive Director, CAROLA - Georgetown University Law Center

Requirements

The Center for the Advancement of the Rule of Law in the Americas (CAROLA) is a premier center for the study of Latin American law and policy in a wider hemispheric context. At CAROLA we have set out to provide a platform for critical, independent analysis of existing institutions, generate informed policy proposals about both substantive law and legal systems, and recommend practical reforms that have the potential of improving the lives of individuals, particularly those traditionally marginalized.
The experienced Executive Director (ED) provides oversight and develops and coordinates strategic goals on behalf of the Faculty Director. S/he will be responsible for the Center's operation along with designing and managing center initiatives, programs, and events, developing financial resources and programs, and writing grant proposals and reports. Reporting to the Center's Faculty Director and where necessary, consulting and coordinating with other faculty at the Law Center, the Executive Director has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Program Development and Leadership
  • In consultation with faculty director, formulates the Center's yearly strategies and goals.
  • Consults with the Faculty Director to develop research programs, teaching programs, and agenda, directing long-term planning.
  • Oversees implementation of research programs and agenda.
  • Plans and implements publication of law and policy research papers each year.
  • Manages the Center's academic events and curricular student-centered programs.

Management and Operations
  • Oversees thee day-to-day activities of the Center.
  • Develops policies and procedures.
  • Advises the faculty director about funding, staffing, and space needs.
  • Manages the Center's staff and supervise staff member's management of research assistants and other collaborators.

External Relations
  • Represents the Center as its primary on-campus point of contact.
  • Represents the Center to funding agencies and partner organizations.
  • Coordinates with the faculty director to identify and pursue new sources of funding.
  • Develops financial resources and programs.
  • Writes grant proposals and reports, representing the Center in speaking engagements, in both scholarly and professional settings.
  • Oversees Center communications, including by managing its social media and web presence.
  • Builds the Center's network of alumni, scholars, and other contacts.

Qualifications
  • J.D. Degree
  • At least 7+ years of experience working on law and policy issues in the Americas
  • Recognized expertise in one or more of the thematic areas of the Center: international trade and investment, rule of law promotion & development assistance, transnational labor law, drug law and policy
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs or research agenda
  • Significant experience in academic administration and fund raising
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish languages
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
