Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Department head and Associate/Assistant University Librarian, Boca Raton, FL.

Depending upon selected applicant qualifications, appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate University Librarian.


Summary of Responsibilities:

Librarianship

  • Manage department operations, projects, personnel, budget, and collections.
  • Maintain and cultivate positive vendor relationships.
  • Oversee the ongoing training and mentoring of the Medical Liaison & Outreach Librarian and provide annual evaluations.
  • Develop and maintain close working/collaborative relationships with College of Medicine faculty members, students, and staff.
  • Provide research services including conducting literature reviews as part of grant writing, project proposals, reports, articles, and case studies.
  • Provide fall and spring transaction statistical reports for the Deans of the College of Medicine and the Dean of University Libraries using data collection, analysis, and reporting skills and tools/software.
  • Work with the Medical Liaison & Outreach Librarian and other Libraries’ colleagues in developing innovative tools and services to promote library services and resources and deliver a high level of service to all user groups.
  • Identify and meet the instructional needs for CoM curriculum and research through face-to-face, online, and other types of instruction for library resources, information literacy, research and publishing, citation management, evidence-based medicine, and self-directed and lifelong learning.
  • Lead the CoM faculty, medical education team, and all stakeholders in continued development, evaluation, and revision of the lifelong learning and evidence-based medicine curriculum and assignments to meet established program goals, objectives, and competencies.
  • Collaborate with course directors and administration to organize and manage all aspects of the Lifelong Learning & Discovery Thread for integration throughout the four-year curriculum.

Scholarship and Research

  • Investigate opportunities to carry out, publish, and present original research and projects that are related to your area of expertise.
  • Participate in library, university, and community activities as they relate to professional development goals.
  • Seek resources and opportunities to develop or hone knowledge, skills, and abilities related to job functions and the profession.

Service

  • Serve as a member of the Libraries Leadership Team and participate fully in strategic planning, review and approval of policies and procedures, and in collective decision-making and development.
  • Participate in accreditation activities and reporting such as representing the Libraries in preparing for and participating in meetings with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) during site visits. Areas of focus include learning resources, library resources, study spaces, self-directed and lifelong learning, and the scientific method.
  • Serve on appropriate Libraries, University, College, regional or national committees including participating as a voting member of the CoM’s Curriculum Committee, Curriculum Integration and Program Evaluation Committee, and Learning Resources Committee.

General

  • Contribute to the development and strengthening of a positive view of the FAU Libraries as an active partner in the University’s educational and research mission and assist with promoting the Libraries’ needs and services, as requested.
  • Participate in strategic planning for FAU Libraries, CoM, and the Dept.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:
MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent required at time of application.

Minimum five years of experience in an academic library.

Demonstrated experience with teaching or research in an academic environment.

Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

Skilled in current database searching and Microsoft Office Suite.

Demonstrated initiative and strong interpersonal skills with a high level of professionalism and exceptional work ethic.

Commitment to including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation, and perspectives in research, teaching, service, and other work.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, resident, staff, and administrators.

Ability to analyze and adapt to change in an ever-evolving and rapidly growing institution to best meet the needs of the organization.

Evident desire for lifelong learning and for contributing to the profession through scholarly research and communication and service expectations of a non-tenure track position.

Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Librarian or higher.

Preferred:
Minimum of three years of supervisory and administrative experience.

Knowledge of current trends in academic medical libraries.

Knowledge of educational technologies.

Demonstrated experience using and teaching citation management software.
