Position Summary
The main role for this position involves the preparation of biomass and running various compositional analyses on a wide range of biomass for bioenergy research projects. In detail, the duties include milling and extracting biomass, performing various compositional assays, and using analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, and spectrophotometers to quantify target analytes. Other duties include general laboratory upkeep and maintenance, ordering supplies, good record keeping, data entry and sample tracking using a LIMS, and instrument and equipment calibrations.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Plant Biology; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an analytical laboratory to include HPLC and/or GC-MS analysis of compounds and presentation of reports, general lab maintenance and recordkeeping; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired QualificationsBachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Plant Biology with one to two years laboratory experience or Masters degree in related field; experience in analyzing and quantifying compounds by HPLC or GC-MS; experience in setting up standardized protocols in multistep procedures to derivatize compounds; experience in software to evaluate the data by statistical means and to produce reports; experience in maintenance of GC-MS or other related analytical instrumentation.
