Position Summary

The main role for this position involves the preparation of biomass and running various compositional analyses on a wide range of biomass for bioenergy research projects. In detail, the duties include milling and extracting biomass, performing various compositional assays, and using analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, and spectrophotometers to quantify target analytes. Other duties include general laboratory upkeep and maintenance, ordering supplies, good record keeping, data entry and sample tracking using a LIMS, and instrument and equipment calibrations.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Plant Biology; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an analytical laboratory to include HPLC and/or GC-MS analysis of compounds and presentation of reports, general lab maintenance and recordkeeping; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Plant Biology with one to two years laboratory experience or Masters degree in related field; experience in analyzing and quantifying compounds by HPLC or GC-MS; experience in setting up standardized protocols in multistep procedures to derivatize compounds; experience in software to evaluate the data by statistical means and to produce reports; experience in maintenance of GC-MS or other related analytical instrumentation.
