Montgomery College is Maryland's premier community college. The College is dedicated to student success and is widely recognized for the quality and scope of its academic programs. This expectation of quality has yielded top programs in the Chemical and Biological Sciences area like embedded classroom support (ATPA Coaches, student Learning Assistants), program-specific Academic Advisors, and Early College programs in Biological Sciences and Health Sciences. Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions like the University of Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. We are seeking a full-time Biology faculty member to fill a position beginning January 2020 who is excited by this level of excellence and is committed to student success.
The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment, and will welcome the opportunity to help students with diverse learning abilities overcome barriers to success. They will also possess the ability to teach in an engaging manner that motivates students. The faculty member will primarily teach our Principles of Biology courses and a Principles of Genetics course. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, program assessment work, curriculum development, advising, professional development, committee work, and learning advanced instructional technology. The opportunity of working with students to do laboratory research will also be possible. The majority of our courses use open educational resources (OERs) to yield cost savings for the students and the most current content for faculty. Incoming faculty will utilize OERs in alignment with the other faculty in the discipline. Montgomery College is a public, fully accredited, open admission institution.
Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses and instructs courses at area high schools as well as high school students on campus. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses and/or teaching online if the need exists.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Teaches non-major and major-level courses; teaching assignment expected to include BIOL 150: Principles of Biology I and BIOL 222: General Genetics. Opportunities to teach environmental science, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and/or molecular and cellular biology courses exist.
- Teaches 30 semester hours per academic year. Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts; evaluates and grades students' exams, assignments, and papers.
- Teaches a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend and/or accelerated sections, compressed and online. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
- Teaches at any of the three physical campuses (TPSS, Rockville, and Germantown), online, and at area high schools, if needed.
- Works with embedded academic support personnel and/or uses embedded technological resources.
- Applies culturally relevant pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.
- Engages students in their learning through active, collaborative learning approaches.
- Works with other faculty in the discipline to develop free of cost course materials for students using Open Educational Resources.
- May provide tutoring sessions for biology coursework.
- Incorporates the use of an educational enterprise platform (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction, including inexpensive or no-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
- Meets with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students.
- Advises students about program curriculum, transfer options to four-year institutions, and professional/career opportunities.
- Serves on, or leads, department, discipline, campus and college committees.
- Maintains an active program of professional development and participates in professional organizations and activities.
- Engages in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs and learning outcomes with the goal of increasing student success.
- Master of Science degree or higher from an accredited institution in the area of Biological Science, Zoology, Cell Science, Environmental Science, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology or other closely related field.
- Teaching experience at the college level (associates, bachelors, or masters-level teaching); teaching done as a graduate student or as a teaching assistant will be considered.
- Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in an academic or industry environment in a field related to biological sciences.
- Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
- Understanding of and commitment to student success including increasing retention, transfer and graduation.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
- Ph.D. in the area of Biological Science, Zoology, Cell Science, Environmental Science, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology or other closely related field
- Three (3) years of full-time teaching experience at the college level, equivalent in industry, or combination.
- Demonstrated experience using various teaching modalities (seat-based, blended/hybrid, and online).
- Familiarity with teaching technologies (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas).
- Experience teaching college-level Principles of Genetics course for one year or more.
- Experience teaching college-level cell and/or molecular biology course for one year or more.
