Maria College Dean of Nursing

Maria College is a private Catholic institution founded by the Sisters of Mercy on the principle of service to others as a key feature of the works of mercy. Maria provides student-focused opportunity education and seeks an experienced and innovative educator to serve as Dean of Nursing to lead the college’s nursing programs. The college offers a Practical Nursing Certificate program, an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing, and an RN-BS Degree in Nursing Completion program and plans to add additional nursing programs in the near future.

The Dean of Nursing will report to the Dean of the College/Chief Academic Officer and provide strategic planning, innovative leadership, and sound fiscal and personnel management for the department in support of the College’s mission and institutional objectives. The Dean of Nursing is responsible for maintaining the relevance and rigor of the nursing programs to align with expectations of Maria College as a vigorous academic institution. Additionally, the Dean of Nursing will promote and continue to support Maria’s positive student focused culture of academic excellence and inclusivity.

A successful Dean of Nursing will:

Implement Maria College’s strategic plan, which calls for Nursing Program enrollment growth through partnerships and new programs, while continuing to improve student learning and career experiences

Develop and execute plans that support and grow the nursing programs and advance the college’s strategic goals and objectives

Propose a compelling vision for academic excellence, efficiency and community involvement for the faculty and staff of Maria College’s Nursing Department

Guide faculty at all levels to ensure delivery of exemplary instruction

Bring successful experience with alternate modes of teaching and learning methods in nursing education (e.g., classroom-based, online, accelerated, blended, low residency)

Implement and promote academic programs and evaluate program effectiveness

Monitor trends in nursing and health care to identify ideas and opportunities for development and growth, including analysis of market feasibility

Cultivate relationships that promote engagement, partnership, and collaboration within the local and regional education and health care communities

Present a collaborative, flexible and transparent leadership style that supports team building and promotes the accountability required in effective professional programs

Ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures, NYSED regulations, and accreditation standards and criteria

Oversee development, revision, and evaluation of the nursing curricula in collaboration with the nursing leadership team and faculty

Facilitate faculty recruitment, retention, development, and promotion

Provide advisement to staff responsible for class scheduling and teaching assignments

Collaborate with staff to keep all catalogs and marketing materials current

Represent Maria College at meetings and conferences as requested

Engage in regional accreditation activities in collaboration with members of the senior leadership team

Meet an expectation of scholarly engagement appropriate to discipline and interest of successful candidate

Education and/or Experience

  • An earned doctorate in nursing, education, or a related field and master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution. A current and unencumbered license to practice as a registered professional nurse in NYS.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and clinical nursing practice.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in positions of higher education leadership, such as dean, associate dean, department chair, or program director.
  • Strategic planning and budgetary responsibility.
  • Familiarity and experience with regional and professional accreditation standards and criteria.
  • Familiarity and experience with NYSED, and ACEN, regulations pertaining to nursing education programs and eligibility for licensure.
  • Experience in program development, evaluation, and assessment of student learning.
  • A record of scholarship, including publication, presentation, and research.
  • Commitment to career-relevant opportunity education in the context of the Mercy Educational Tradition.
  • A collegial spirit, and commitment to nurse education that improves patient care and builds healthier communities.
