Director of the Center for International and Regional Studies
Georgetown University in Qatar

Georgetown University in Qatar invites applications for the position of Director of the Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS). Established at GU-Q in 2005 CIRS is dedicated to the academic study of regional and international issues through promoting dialogue and the exchange of ideas, research and scholarship, and engagement with national and international scholars, practitioners, opinion-makers, activists, and the wider community. To date CIRS has launched over 40 major research initiatives, published numerous books with university presses, and has established itself as a leading academic research center working in and on the Gulf region and the greater Middle East.

Guided by the principles of academic excellence, forward vision, and community engagement, the CIRS mission revolves around six principal goals:

  • To provide a forum for scholarship and research on international and regional affairs
  • To encourage in-depth examination and exchange of ideas by undertaking its own research projects and facilitating faculty and student research
  • To foster thoughtful dialogue among students, scholars, and practitioners of international affairs
  • To act as a catalyst for researchers worldwide to come together in Doha for the production of original research on issues of particular regional and global relevance
  • To facilitate the free flow of ideas and knowledge through publishing the products of its research, sponsoring public lectures, and holding working groups designed to explore political, social, cultural, and economic complexities of the Middle East in the twenty-first century
  • To engage in outreach activities with a wide range of local, regional, and international partners

Reporting to the Dean, the Director of CIRS will provide strategic leadership for the Center and guide its growth and development in close collaboration with the CIRS advisory board and the faculty of GU-Q. The successful candidate will be responsible for sustaining and expanding the Center's research agenda, actively engaging GU-Q faculty and students in the Center's research initiatives, and fostering collaboration with scholars, policy makers, and decision makers, both locally and globally, to expand the Center's reputation and the impact of its research. The Director ensures that the Center's programs support the university's broader goals of scholarship and teaching, and works closely with the Dean and different academic and administrative units towards this end. The Director will also contribute to the Center's research output by actively participating in CIRS research projects and through maintaining an active publication agenda of his or her own.

The Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Center's day-to-day operations and programing. Core areas of responsibility include:

    - Ensure quality of research and analysis produced by CIRS
    - Set timelines for publication of research
    - Coordinate the work of the program's scholars to maintain a coherent intellectual agenda in line with the Center's mission
    - Build collaborative relationships with GU-Q faculty and other scholars and experts to facilitate the success of the Center's research efforts
    - Maintain collaborative partnerships with internal and external stake-holders to facilitate the operations of the Center
    - Develop programs that facilitate student research
    - Submit annual reports outlining the Center's activities and programs and their impact and outcomes
    - Manage the CIRS budget
    - Manage and supervise the CIRS staff and associated fellows

Candidates should be established scholars with outstanding academic credentials suitable for appointment as a senior core faculty member at GU-Q, including a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching, and a background in political science, international affairs, history, or a relevant social science discipline.
