DESCRIPTION

The Epic Ambulatory Optimization Trainer, within Information Services plays an important role in educating and preparing new and existing staff at UC San Diego Health that make use of the Epic EMR and other IT applications. As part of the IS Training team, incumbent will support end user learning, especially in the ambulatory space, via a variety of channels.

Primary responsibilities include; working with a team of analysts/trainers to optimize workflows and inform the optimization build of Epic, specific to end user feedback and governance. Provide support to the Senior Ambulatory Optimization Trainer, this will include participation in optimization sprints at all ambulatory sites within UC San Diego Health.

In addition, the Epic Ambulatory Optimization Trainer may also provide classroom instruction for clinical and non-clinical staff on Epic applications and other IT services during new employee orientation as well as ongoing refresher classes. Acquire knowledge of Epic functionality and workflows of audience group. Perform site visits in hospital and clinic areas, shadowing end user workflows for learning and observation. Provide 1:1 instruction and at-the-elbow support when necessary. Work closely with application training and build analysts to ensure proper understanding and communication related to class curriculum, system changes and best practices.

Provides feedback from classroom and on-site visits to help optimize system and users’ understanding of the same. Conduct self as a positive spokesperson and “face” of the IS team at all times and take responsibility for end user learning and satisfaction with IS services. Create and maintain classroom rosters using the Learning Management System and assist users with LMS activities as necessary. Follow standard training procedures and curriculum to ensure high quality and consistent learning experience for end users. Assist with creation of learning materials for end users including tip-sheets, handouts, e-learning, quick-start guides etc. as necessary. Perform other training and communication related duties as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in healthcare information technology, computer science, or related area; and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.

  • Required to be certified in an assigned EMR vendor's product/module within the first six (6) months of employment.

  • Must satisfy all vendor testing requirements to be certified without needing to attend vendor's training a second time for the same class.

  • Three (3+) or more years of relevant experience i.e. Analyst, Trainer, Clinical Informatics.

  • Proven ability to provide expert consultative guidance and direction on change initiatives affecting clinical care processes.

  • Strong ability in workflow and data analysis and design techniques, including needs assessment, specification development, quantitative methods, planning and gap analysis.

  • Experience and proven success in information systems implementation, development and support within a large-scale healthcare organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize day-to-day activities along with short and long-term projects.

  • In-depth knowledge of organizational and project planning processes and ability to produce and maintain high quality planning documents.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • EPIC Certification.

  • Experience as a major participant in a clinical system implementation.
