Under supervision, serve as Research and Communications Specialist by providing research support to all of the Aburto Lab’s Mexican mangrove research initiatives. This includes assisting in field research and subsequent lab and data analysis. The position will conduct literature reviews and writing up technical and scientific documents. Duties include working in science communications and dissemination of the above research to achieve our goal of reaching a variety of audiences.

• Must have open water SCUBA certification and scientific diving certification.
• Ability to travel and work on a varied schedule.

• A Master's Degree in marine science or climate change. Theoretical knowledge of mangrove ecosystems, climate sciences, and conservation biology.

• Marine and terrestrial field experience, with a strong background and expertise working in mangrove ecosystems and rocky intertidal ecosystems.

• Research knowledge and expertise on mangrove ecosystems and coastal climate change impacts, adaptation, and resilience.

• Proven experience with soil sample analysis including drying, grinding, measuring apparent density, and detection of carbon content, both organic and inorganic, through a variety of methods.

• These methods should include acid dilution and preparing samples for an elemental analyzer.Proven experience with intertidal soil sampling, including the use of a variety of coring methods.

• Demonstrated experience in working in the intertidal zone under various conditions (tidal fluctuations and high heat).

• Strong experience with research and data analysis. Demonstrated experience with performing literature reviews.

• Experience preparing samples for radiocarbon analysis, as well as how to process radiocarbon data to determine age of samples.

• Demonstrated experience with dissection, confocal, and compound microscopy.

• Spanish proficiency and translation experience.

• Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS, including the ability to create digital elevation models.

• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with GIS and R.

• Experience with technical and scientific writing. Ability to review and edit writing to fit a specific target audience (e.g. students, scientists, general public, or policy makers).

• Proven experience with the design and creation of informational graphics geared towards different audiences. Ability to work and coordinate with complex, interdisciplinary teams.

• Demonstrated experience with digital science communication including blogs and social media.

• Strong ability to organize and manage large quantities of media files, including adding metadata and tagging image files for sorting.

• Excellent communication skills. Experience communicating scientific findings to general audiences, including working with media groups to create articles, press releases, and preparing press packages.

• Ability and willingness to travel to Mexico.

• SCUBA and scientific diving certification. Underwater field experience (including SCUBA surveys and equipment maintenance).
