POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Academic Advising, the Academic Counselor provides academic advising to students on the College's general education requirements, UCSD policies and procedures, progress towards graduation, and overall decision-making on academic and career issues. Primary responsibilities include serving as back up to the new student enrollment coordinator for the College and providing in-person/walk-in advising as well as online advising via the Virtual Advising Center. Interprets broadly written academic regulations and policies, makes decisions on the application of coursework from other institutions, and acts on student requests for withdrawals. Counsels students who are experiencing academic difficulty, discusses options and alternatives, offers advice regarding degree requirements, program and curriculum planning, post baccalaureate, graduate and career options. Evaluates and acts on academic records. Performs quarterly reviews of academic records to ensure compliance with academic regulations and policies, and communicates with students accordingly. Conducts presentations at new student orientation and other outreach events. Provides virtual enrollment advising to a caseload of new freshman and transfer students. Serves as primary back up to the Assistant Academic Counselor (front desk). Assists with developing and implementing programs and workshops, as needed. Serves on College and campus-wide committees.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with academic advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of educational theory and principles, and experience in practical application of counseling techniques in a college advising environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of department / school / college policies, procedures, and requirements. Ability to analyze, interpret, apply and explain a variety of college, departmental and campus academic policies and procedures.

  • Proven skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving. Skill in helping students with decision making.

  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Demonstrated skills and abilities in problem solving and conflict resolution with the ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening. Demonstrated tact and diplomacy in working with diverse population, including parents, students, faculty, campus administrators, and the public.

  • Ability to multi-task. Demonstrated skill in organizing work and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines. Ability to manage heavy workload and handle multiple tasks with potentially competing deadlines while maintaining accuracy. Demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative, work independently, and exercise professional judgment.

  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating academic records.

  • Expertise in functioning as a group leader and facilitating group interactions.

  • Demonstrated referral and liaison skills and recognition and maintenance of confidentiality. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Proven ability to identify and develop appropriate strategies in relation to specific populations and meet the needs of various groups and individuals.

  • Demonstrated skill in using standard office computer technology (including internet technology and web based systems) and campus administrative computing systems, and the willingness and ability to update and maintain those skills as required.
