Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is actively seeking a Patient Transporter to perform patient transportation duties associated with care.

General Description:

Transport patients with in the different areas of the hospital. Assists the nursing and surgical professional staff in care of the patient and in maintaining a safe and clean environment under the direction of the nursing staff, charge nurse, nurse manager, and director of the department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Pick up and transfer patients using the appropriate operational procedures and customer service standards. These units include Perioperative Services, 6th Floor Ambulatory Services, 5th Floor Inpatient Services, Holding Room 1, Holding Room 2 and the Operating Rooms.

Use the standard greeting in every contact with patient. Transfer patients cautiously and safely. Interact with patients in a respectful manner, following the appropriate face to face standards. Monitor the availability of equipment (wheelchairs, stretchers, chair-beds, batteries) and report needs to the charge nurse. Daily maintenance and cleaning, re-stocking of equipment and supplies. Comply with Infection Control Standards required for patient transportation.

  • Pick up and deliver diverse items (such as medications form Pharmacy, lab specimens, implants, instruments, etc.) to and from other facilities or destinations maintaining the appropriate operational procedures and customer service standards.

Use the standard greeting in every contact with patient. Maintain professional behavior while executing all duties, following the appropriate face to face standards. Handle diverse items with care and responsibility. Daily cleaning of assigned areas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:·Ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written, oral or schedule form.·Ability to read and interpret documents such as assignment boards, patient IDs and identify the correct patient’s chart based on 2 patient identifiers, procedure manuals, and safety rules.
  • Ability to write routine logs.
  • Ability to effectively respond to questions from patients and employees.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with every day issues.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written, oral or schedule form.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with diverse population.
  • Ability to communicate in a manner which shows empathy for patients.
  • Ability to interact with patients of different age groups.
  • Capability to move 120 pounds or more on chair beds or stretchers.
  • Capability to stand or walk for long periods.
Education Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Work Experience Requirements:
  • One (1) year of experience working in an independent atmosphere with minimal supervision and high public contact.
