Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

- Completing of a Bachelor’s degree plus one year in direct research protocol development and management, preferably in an educational institutional or equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws as well as policies governing the use of animals in research is required.

-Three or more years of experience in research management and administration is highly desired. Entry level AALAS certification and CPIA certification or eligibility to sit for exams

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Research and in cooperation with the Director of Animal Care and Use, IACUC Coordinator and Chair, the IACUC Compliance Specialist has a vital role in ensuring a high quality animal care and use program that reflects the University of Georgia’s commitment to the humane and responsible use of animals. In this role the incumbent is responsible for the administrative management of research compliance and of the activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

Excellent service to the UGA research community, the IACUC members and other key research support services is essential. Effective execution of the incumbent’s responsibilities is critical in ensuring the University’s continued compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and policy.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures and techniques involved in IACUC business practices; Considerable knowledge of UGA policies and procedures pertaining to research compliance; Considerable knowledge of USDA, OLAW and AAALAC regulations, policies and procedures; Demonstrated ability to craft effective written and oral communications; ability to work independently and cooperatively in a time-sensitive environment; skill in maintaining and exhibiting professionalism at all times; and the ability to handle complex and confidential communications, information and documents. Demonstrated ability and efficiency in computer skills, word processing and database management. Exemplary interpersonal skills, high attention to detail, multi-tasking and time management skills, and ability to exercise sound judgment as well as the capacity to cooperatively interact with members of the university community at all levels.

Physical Demands

Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 20 lbs and carrying up to 20 lbs. Be fitted for a particulate respirator or PAPR and wear it when needed.

-Conducts independent preliminary administrative and technical reviews of submitted Animal Use Proposals (AUP), assigning further review as required, and tracking the review process until completion
-Initiates the timely annual review and/or facilitates modification of AUPs; tracks, documents, and manages the process to completion
-Distributes the Weekly List, performs designated member reviews, and maintains materials and approval letters

-Schedules semi-annual facility inspections and program reviews, coordinates site visits with the facility managers and the IACUC members
-Interprets inspection findings, prepares draft and final inspection reports, and reports site visit findings to the IACUC

-Serves as a primary OACU liaison with the research community by consulting with investigators on issues prior to submission of AUPs; notifying the investigators in writing of the IACUC review results, including any conditions for final approval; and/or advising the client on required modifications of AUP for resubmission
-Serves as liaison between ORIS and other OR and UGA offices and faculty regarding routine questions
-Maintains ACU and IACUC webpages with dynamic information for IACUC members and researchers. Maintenance includes Inspection Schedule, Announcements, IACUC roster, Important Info for Protocol review, as well as text changes to web content
-Performs regular editing and maintenance of text and hyperlinks in the Animal Use Protocol form; adds items to dropdown lists on form
-Sets up and breaks down for monthly IACUC meetings; maintains minutes to support IACUC Coordinator; fills in at IACUC meetings for IACUC Coordinator as needed

-Conducts data stewardship and regularly scheduled queries for ACU metrics including: Protocol approval through-put, DOD amendments, Biohazards & Hazardous Chemicals, and others as requested
-Collects and organizes inspection data such that frequently identified deficiencies or locations requiring assistance/training can be addressed at a program level
-Submits and monitors IT tickets
-Maintains/conveys OACU customer satisfaction surveys to Office of Research quality assurance manager
-Maintains accurate listserv rosters for IACUC and Artemis users
-Performs check ins with researchers regarding Pilot Study Renewals and Cat C renewals; maintains response data
-Maintains OACU N-Drive

-Maintains report of IACUC member training statuses; Communicates personalized reminders as needed for deficient training
-Develops and provides in-person Compliance Training to research community and IACUC members
-Actively communicates with Research Support Services regarding personnel training, data feed functionality, and occupational health inquiries
-Drafts and sends weekly inspection schedule notices (This Week’s Inspections) for IACUC members and alternates
-Develops outreach materials such as the newsletter

-Assists in ensuring that UGA policy development is consistent with emerging regulatory mandates
-Assists in writing policies, standard operating procedures, and other documents or website narratives
