Description:

The Journalism and Strategic Communication Internship Coordinator will help the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications administer its growing internship program and internship-related events. The position reports to the department head.

STATUS: Part-Time, Without Benefits
WORK HOURS: Flexible schedule, 18 to 20 hours per week mid-August through mid-May. Occasional summer hours. This position is limited to less than 999 hours in an anniversary year, and employees may not exceed 29 hours per week, though the number of hours anticipated by the department are fewer.
FLSA: Non-Exempt
MINIMUM PAY: $18.00 / hour

ESSENTIAL AND RELATED FUNCTIONS:

  • Arranging and monitoring summer internships for students majoring in journalism, business journalism, and strategic communication;
  • Meeting with students individually and in group sessions for guidance on internship applications, and the writing of resumes and cover letters;
  • Handling financial aspects of all internship programs supported by university and foundation funds, including cash disbursements, budget reconciliation and regular reports to the donors and foundations about the recipients’ experiences;
  • Contacting internship supervisors at least once during the summer to see how students are doing and again at the end of the summer for a written evaluation;
  • Preparing an annual report to the journalism department head each August, analyzing internship supervisor evaluations and flagging any areas that need curricular attention;
  • Arranging and hosting on-campus recruiters and working with Career Development to create opportunities and set up interview schedules;
  • Publicizing internship opportunities and deadlines, through the department’s website, emails, posters and social media sites;
  • Coordinating fall internship presentations and completion of work, including recommendations for grades;
  • Coordinating student contest entries.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree and substantial work experience in journalism and/or public relations are preferred. Candidates should have superior written communication skills and computer and financial literacy. Basic knowledge of Word and Excel is a must and skill with online survey tools and website support is desired. The successful candidate must be an organized self-starter able to juggle several tasks at once. A consistent record of attendance and punctuality is essential.
