General Duties:
Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while following CDC and OSHA guidelines as well as AMMI Standards.
Decontaminating, preparing, and sterilizing dental instruments.
Utilizing quality assurance and infection control techniques, processing and inspecting dental instruments for broken and missing items.
Working knowledge of various sterilization steps while utilizing Steam Autoclaves and Ethylene Oxide systems to consistently follow protocols and procedures.
Utilizing carts on wheels to transfer sterilization loads within the unit weighing about 200 lbs.
Distributing sterilized goods to various clinics throughout the school.
Presenting and demonstrating hands-on training of the Central Sterilization procedures to students studying dental disciplines as well as students coming from other backgrounds of study that rotate through the unit.
Dispensing instruments and consumables to DDS students at the clinic dispensaries.

Production, Teamwork, and Customer Service Duties:
Provide customer service to DDS, DH, faculty, staff, co-workers, and patients while serving in the student dispensaries and other areas of the dental school.
Using written and oral communication to collaborate effectively with all team members.
Maintaining a positive work environment that fosters inclusion.
Input and output of sterilized instruments without compromising quality or the integrity of the sterilization unit or the dental school community.
Helping reduce costs through collaboration with management and utilizing inventory tracking systems to manage inventories of both instruments and consumables.

Other duties, tasks and projects:
Clinical licensure exam support.
Annual instrument sharpening events.
Various other dental lab and continuing education events.
Special assignments within the scope of the position as assigned.

Education and Experience

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalency

Candidate must be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to work in a high volume production line environment while operating on-site disinfecting and sterilizing equipment.
  • Ability to provide regular on-site, face-to-face, customer service to staff, faculty, and students at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry location.

Essential Skills:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with people of all levels and backgrounds.
Ability to perform a variety of recurring tasks and functions related to assigned processes and procedures (e.g., pull/fill orders, place orders, and maintain inventory).
Ability to maintain flexibility and professional attitude while providing customer service in a fast paced environment.
Ability to manage and verify files, records, and inventory.
Ability to operate bar code scanner and inventory tracking software for instruments and consumables.

Preferred:
Sterile Processing and Distribution experience.
Customer Service experience in a health care setting.
Knowledge of dental terminology, instruments and consumables or Central Sterilization Technician Certification.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites – Word, Excel, and Power Point, and Outlook Express.
Infographic experience will be helpful.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

Must be able to maneuver supply carts weighing up to 200 lbs with or without accommodation.

Must be able to lift/move up to 35 lbs with or without accommodation.

Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.     Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
