Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

The associate vice president has primary responsibility to provide the strategic leadership of a comprehensive global principal gifts program, representing Case Western Reserve University’s highest strategic priorities that impact the university’s future and national reputation. The associate vice president is responsible for the development of overall fundraising plans for the strategic priorities in alignment with the overarching strategies of the university’s division of university relations and development. The incumbent raises principal gifts ($5,000,000+) and provides strategic oversight and management of the university’s global principal giving program. As an experienced development professional, the Associate Vice President is expected to engage in direct face-to-face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors, and collaborate with university relations and development in developing strategies for the university's fundraising programs, and plan and implement initiatives for the university’s highest priorities, national and international development, and major and principal gifts. The associate vice president supervises a team of principal gift officers and the donor engagement function the area of strategic initiatives and global principal gifts. This position will work closely with the university leadership including the president and members of the board of trustees to advance strategic initiatives and transformational philanthropic opportunities, as well as recruit, train and partner with volunteers to raise principal gifts for the university. This position will serve as a member of the senior development staff. As part of the university development team, the incumbent will be expected to work collegially, and in partnership, with central and school-based colleagues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develop a portfolio of high potential principal giving prospects with giving potential in the range of $5,000,000+. Develop and implement strategic cultivation, solicitation and/or engagement strategies for each prospect to maximize principal gifts to the university. (50%)

2.Lead and implement the university’s principal giving strategy aimed to maximize the lifetime engagement and philanthropic support of Case Western Reserve University’s most affluent donors and families. Supervise four senior directors and two donor engagement professionals. Suggest areas of focus for principal giving travel and prepare individuals for principal gift solicitation. (40%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.Recruit, train and manage volunteers as appropriate, who will actively participate in the soliciting of gifts of all levels. Partner with volunteers to engage and cultivate individuals who have capacity to make gifts of $5,000,000 or more to the university. (5%)

2.Serve as a member of the senior development staff and assist with the development and implementation of program strategies and overall departmental development plans to fulfill the mission of the university. (5%)

3.Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. (<1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with the vice president, senior directors and director of department. Contact with staff as required to perform essential functions.

University: Daily contact with the president's office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.

External: Contact with trustees, alumni, donors, friends of the university, vendors and volunteers as required to perform essential functions.

Students: Contact with students as required to perform essential functions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervising a staff of principal gift and stewardship development professionals (3).

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 12 or more years of progressive professional experience in higher education administration, external relations, development, or related fields and a successful track record of closing six and seven figure major and/or leadership gifts.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor's degree required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment, occasional nights and weekend hours. Regular travel required.
