ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

DEPARTMENT OF IMMUNOLOGY ANDMICROBIOLOGY

 NATURE OF WORK:

Thisis a tenure-eligible Assistant Professor position in the Department ofImmunology and Microbiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  The primary duties are to develop a strong,externally funded research program and teach medical and graduate students.Candidates should have research interests and experience in microbiology,immunology, mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis and/or host response toinfection.

 SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The individual holding thisposition will report to the Chair of the Department of Immunology andMicrobiology.

 SUPERVISION PROVIDED:

The person holding this position will develop and directan independent, externally funded research program related to microbiologyand/or immunology.  This individual willbe responsible for the daily management, supervision, training and evaluationof personnel (such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and professionalresearch assistants) whose positions are funded by research grants on whichs/he is the principal investigator.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Theduties of the individual holding this position will be threefold.  First, the individual is expected to developa productive, externally funded research program. Second, the individual willcarry out teaching of medical and graduate students as assigned by thedepartment chair and performed under the supervision of designated directorsfor individual courses. Third, as requested by the chair, the individual isexpected to participate in service activities within the department, theuniversity, and the broader scientific community that contribute to theaccomplishment of department and university missions and that promote thesuccess and welfare of the broader scientific community. This responsibility includes keeping abreast ofcurrent literature, formulating long- and short-term research goals, designingand performing appropriate experiments to achieve those goals, maintainingcompliance with all institutional, state, and federal biomedical researchguidelines, rules, and regulations, evaluating laboratory data and protocols,preparing and submitting manuscripts based on research conducted within the laboratory,and preparing and submitting grant applications to appropriate federal orprivate agencies to secure funding for the research program.  It is important for the individual tointeract effectively with other members of departmental faculty and the scientificcommunity and to establish fruitful research collaborations. The individual isexpected to present research in all appropriate venues to increase theawareness of research being performed in the laboratory and to facilitatecollaborations and interactions. These first two duties represent the primaryresponsibilities of the faculty member.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:


The hiring salary isnegotiable and commensurate with skills and experience.  This position is not eligible for overtimecompensation.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires a PhD, MD or comparable doctoraldegree in the biomedical sciences with at least two years of post-doctoralexperience within the broad field of Microbiology or Immunology. The applicantmust have excellent interpersonal skills, some experience in supervising ortraining of research personnel, familiarity with computers and beself-motivated.  


WORKINGCONDITIONS:


Some flexibility in working schedule may be necessary forthis position, but no ‘on-call’ or shift work is required.
