The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Western Carolina University invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track appointment in Religious Studies at the Assistant Professor level, beginning January 2021. Our departmental emphasis is on the intersections of religious studies and philosophy, and we seek a colleague with interest and competence in both areas. The ideal candidate will have a strong undergraduate teaching record, including in a general education program, and a research agenda focused in at least one of the following: Latin American, Native American, African-American, Caribbean, or indigenous religions. We seek a candidate prepared to contribute to either or both of the University’s new minors in Latinx and African-American Studies. The Department seeks a scholar-teacher who will make meaningful connections between religious studies and contemporary gender, race, and social justice theory.
The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 load including Western Religious Traditions, other general education classes, and undergraduate classes for both philosophy and religion majors. The position includes standard scholarship, service and advising expectations. We are a highly collegial and supportive department offering teaching and research mentorship to the successful candidate.
